The woman bom in the west is a grand and goodly type of wom anhood. She is'strone and keen and comprehensive; she is full of life and grace and freedom; she is quick to feel an injury, and she is quite equal to being her own avenger. Her eye is keen and her tongue is sharp, but her heart is warm and her hand is open. She is always ready with her sympathy and prompt with her help. Her business ability and executive tal ent are of a very high order, as a proof of which is the fact that some of the fine cattle ranches and and most extensive and most pros perous sheep runs are owned and managed by women. I have now in my mind the case of a woman, born in Ohio, who, ten years ago in the state of New York, was earning five or six dollars per week, with which sum she sup ported her mother and her father's brother, a semi-invalid old man. At the time I speak of, when this woman was about 19 years of age, she obtained atfer much diffi culty and delay a grant of a quar ter section of government land to which her dead father had become entitled through his services in the rebellion. This land was located in Oregon. She sent her uncle out to take up tho land, and she pinched and saved, and sent to him irom time to time, almost dol lar by dollar, money with which to hire help to clear a space in the timber and to put up a log house. As soon as this poor shelter was provided for them she took her mother and went .out and lived on the land. As she could from time to time, she bought stock, and so she crept on step by step until now she has a good homo and barn, and last year she cleared from the sale of stock she had raised and from the sale of crops several thousand dollars. And what this woman has done hundreds of wom en are doing every year. And if many of these women have not got much education, their sons and daughters will have. And it is well with a land that breeds such women, and it is with the men of the land who have such mothers BelforiTs 31agazine. Disarming an Unseen Foe. "Tliis was somtlme a paradox," as nam let says. Since, however, the people of Americ i and other lauds ba e been enabled to pit Hostetter's btomach Hitters against that unseen foe, malaria, it Is no loncer a par adox, but an easy possibility. Wherocr malaria evolves Us misty venom to poison the air, and decaying unwholesome vegeta tion impregnates the water, there. In the very stronghold of miasma, is the auxilian potent to disarm the foe and assure efficient protection. Fever and ague, bilious remit tent, dumb ague and ague cake, no raattet how tenaciously they have fastened their clutch on the sj stem, aro first forced to relax their grasp and eventually to abandon it al together. But It Is Its prevents e force that should chiefly recommend the Bitters to per sons dwelling in malaria-cursed localities, for it Is a certain buckler of defence against which the enemy Is powerless. Cures, like wise, djspepsla, rheumatism kidney and bilious ailments. Settlers Must Vacate. St. Cloud, Minn., March 20. The officers here have received no tice from Washington that all en tries which have been made are annulled, and that settlers must vacate the Northern Pacific in demnity lands.
