Thoughtless people have laughed at Riddleberger's esca pades in the senate, while the more thoughtful have experienced a feeline of humiliation that such scenes should be witnessed in the high places of the land. As yet there is a pathetic side to poor Harry Riddleberger's disgrace, into which comparatively few have had an insight. He has a -wife who is a lovely woman, and four as interesting children as ever graced a parent's home and heart. Their suffering is obscured from the public view, but it is none the Jess intense. When 1 Erst knew Riddleberger he was editing a little paper in a country town in the Shenandoah valley. He was as bright and as handsome a young man as there was in the valley, and his warm, genial nature, associated with a frank, open manner, made him a favorite with all classes. He was then and is yet, as honest as the day is long, and courageous to a fault. He early evinced a partiality for politics, and was elected to the state legislature as a Democrat. One day he walked into his news paper office and said to his part ner, ''Smith, we will have to dis solve partnership. I have made up my mind to join Slahone in his readjustment movement. If we succeed I shall land in the United States senate." "But if you don't succeed, what then?" asked the partner. "Why, I shall only be on my back, as I have been a hundred times before," was the laughing reply. Poor fellow little did he realize that he should have both experiences. Politics ruined him. Fiist it was the social glass, then the treat for the boys, then complete slavery to the fiercest of masters; and the po litical career which opened with such brilliant promise has closed in darkness. There is a lesson in Riddleberger's downfall to all young politicians. Saint Paul Globe. Catarrh Cared, .A olergyman, after years of suffer ing from that loathsome disease, Ca tarrh, and vainly trying every known remedy, at last found a recipe which completely enred and saved him from death. Any sufferer from this dread ful disease sending a self addressed stamped envelope to Prof. J. A Law rence, 88 Warren St, New York City, will receive the recipe tree of charge. It is said that the great scheme of Henry Villard. whereby all of Edison's electric companies were to be consolidated into one gigan tic concern has collapsed. A few weeks ago the company, with an authorized capital of $12,000,000, was chartered by the state of New Jersey. The purpose of this cor poration was to consolidate the four separate organizations which have hitherto divided the business of manufacturing and selling Edi son's electric light appliances. J. W. Conn, Druggist. A Liberal Judge. One of the keenest things ever said on the bench is attributed to Judge Walton of Georgia. He once sentenced a man to seven years in prison for a grave crime. The prisoner's counsel asked for a mitigation of the sentence on the ground that the prisoner's health was very poor. "Your honor," said he, "I am satisfied that mj' client cannot live out half that term, and I beg of you to change the sen tence" "Well, under those cir cumstances," said the Judge, "I will change the sentence. I will make it for life instead of seven years." ine prisoner chose to abide by the original sentence, which the judge permitted. DYSPEPSIA, DESPAIR, DEATH.
