co t giuljj gustorhm. ASTORIA. OREGON: WEDNESDAY ...ArEIL4. 13cS Hexby Geoege says: ' I am for Cleveland, free trade and no custom houses.' TnE New York Assembly has cut down Eoscoo Conkling's claim for le gal service from 320,000 to 82.000. The Canadian Pacific will get ten million cash and five million acres of land to surrender their monopoly in Manitoba. England sent here last year 111, 000,000 free trade pamphlets. If free trade were not to benefit England, would those pamphlets be sent over the ocean? . The contest of 18SS promises to bo one of unexampled interest, and of the educating sort whoso benefits are not confined to the more selection of a chief magistrate, or even the accep tance or rejection of political or economic theories. Senator EdjiuntD3 has introduced a bill providing for the inspection of meats intended for exportation, to meet the objections urged against American meat products by the German and French governments, and to prevent the importation into this country of adulterated goods. The newest story is that the Bur lington & Quincy managers brought about the great strike on purpose the object being to force tho other roads into a great railroad trust. If that was the object it has signally failed, and the results may bo disas trous to the great corporation. AIa&a Coast Pilot. Lieutenant-commander H. E. Nich ols, United States navy, attached to the United States coast survey lor the special duty of compiling, has left on the Alaska Commercial company's steamer Dot a, Capt. Erskine, for Ko diak island. He will make an exami nation of the shores and harbors of the island and of the shores and bays of the south side of the Alaska penin sula abreast of Kodiak. In turn he will make visits to and examine all tho shores of Alaska as far as Point Barrow to tho northward, and southward as far as the field of his three-years' surveying in tho southern part of tho Alexander archi pelago. Every headland, inland, rock and danger will be examined so as to be fully described to the navigator. Instantaneous photographs will be taken to indicate the peculiarities which the pencil might overlook in sketching. Commander Nichols is peculiarly fitted for this duty and takes especial interest in tho work, so that when he has concluded his labors a thoroughly reliable coa3t pilot may be expected from his hands. The first coast pilot of the coast of Alaska was made by Prof. George Davidson and published by the gov ernment in 18G9. Tho second one was compiled by W. H. Dall of the coast snrvey, from all available dat-i and his own observations. These and the many maps published by the coast survey added vastly to the informa tion respecting Alaskan waters. "While the coast of California, Ore gon and Washington territory is re markably from dangers to navigation, the waters of Alaska are full of dan gers, and very frequently in tho most unexpected places. The needs of a coast pilot and additional charts are therefore paramount, and it is to bo hoped that congress will give n fair and liberal appropriation for the sur vey ot that territory, which is now looming into great importance. .S'.-F. Call, Marcn 29. The Baseball Season Approachta;. In n few weeks tho papers will be ranch raoro interesting to tho man who is weighed down with business cares during tho day. He can read that Flipkins got his baso on balls, went to second on Skinner's fumble ot Bnnuey's hot one. and took third on Stubben's wild throw-in of Munch's fly to left, only to die at the plate on a splendid double play off Sinnicks grounder to Mehaffy Snagsby." to Lives of statesmen all remind us We can make our lives sublima, And departing leave behind ci Food for scandal for all time.
