Talking about monopoliesl The "printers ot this state are made to pay tribute to a legalized monopoly in the matter of buying paper to print elec tion ballots on, the sale ot which is a monopoly of the worst kind. Paper bought in open market, on business principles, can be had at far less cost than from the agents who have the Eole sale of such paper in this Elate. Every spring that part of Astoria in the vicinity ot "Lovers' Lane" has a visitation of birds and other ani mals, snipe, robin, muskrats, etc.. the muskrats affording great fun for the boys, who kill them by the dozen. This year, however, a skunk has made his presence felt there, and tho boys and dogs that are ready to tackle a xatxskratany day, don't care about routing out a skunk. At present the last named holds the fort. Zinc, placed upon the fire in the atove or grate, is said to have proved itself an effective fire extinguisher ot chimney fires. The surveyors for the Ilwaco & Shoalwater Bay railroad commenced work yesterday and run the lino of stakes in the center of the main busi ness street of the place. We are as sured of the road being in running order by July 1st as far as North Beach. Trap men havo not commenced fish ing yet. It's reported from the cape that screams of some wild animal have been frequently heard about the woods. Furthermore, one man going overtho road about dusk saw an ani mal in the woods whose eyes shone like balls of fire. Tho man walkod rapidly away until ho was startled by a blood-curdling yell which fright ened him so badly that he never stopped running until he reached home. His tale is fully believed, and yet someone who was not with the orowd of fair pedestrians who recently went to tho cape for a little picnic, and who visited tho light-honse, the batteries, tho boat houses, and wore bountifully refreshed on the best the life-crew gallantly provided, and finally escorted home and protected ono lonesome fellow they overtook on their return, has tho nndacity to say that this wild animal story is merely a hoax to frighten our girls and keep them at homo. Wo are to have a masquerado ball on April 13th. Dee Shaw is in town. Miss Inez Stout is here on a visit. Travel is on the inorease and our hotels are doing well. Every per son who na3 used it .speaks in the highest terms' of its merits. I do not know of a single oase it has not cured. I first used it in Yermont, whero I lived before coming here. Goldsmith, chairman ot the state central com mittee, who, among other things said; '"I regret I am unable to be at Pen dleton during the convention and beg to express the hope that harmony and wise counsel will prevail, and that such action will be had as will again lead the party to victory, so as to continue the good work so auspi ciously commenced by the present Democratic administration in estab lishing this government once more as one of purity and honesty and ono ruled by tho people and not by a mon eyed aristecracy: a government whose laws are made to confer tho greatest good to the largest number, and one which will curb the insolence of monopolies and restore to the peoplo the public domain frequently taken from them. It ought to be the mission of your convention to assist in bringing this about." The committee on credentials then submitted their report which was read and after discussion adopted. Up to 3 o'clock both tho committee on permanent organization and plat form had not submitted their report. THE AFTERNOON SESSION. Pendleton, Aprils. Ex-mayor Hume and Mr. John West, ot Westport, were in tho office yesterday with a can of salmon. A can of salmon is not an unusual sight in Astoria, but this was an unusual can ot salmon. It is marked "Spiced Salmon, John West, Westport, Ore od," and is one of two cans that were left from a lot of .spiced salmon that Mr. West put up in 1872, and shipped to uoos bay, wiiere Mr. Hume saw it last summer and bought it, paying 50 cents therefor. The vinegar that Mr. West used in putting it up was Bbipped by him from England. Mr. Hume opened it at the Occident yes terday, and it was found to be pure, sweet and palatable as when put up sixteen years ago. -.... , ni m i i Y.M.C. A. Matters.
