The Astoeian guarantees to It? adver tisers tho largest circulation of any newspa per published on tie Columbia river. Best beefsteak is quoted at eighteen cents a pound. The Tacoma Ledger complains of "a brick famine." Same here: a wfnl. ain't it! The Yaquina Post of the 17th an nounces the Gen. Wright as having 'gone to Portland." Thomas Gulbertson and James Scott will build and run a salmon cannery at West Yaquina this season. The Post-Intelligencer evidently doesn't like the sheriffof King county. In twenty-three lines it calls him "a glittering ass," and "an ignorant wolf." Yesterday's Oregonian has a very good letter signed by Justice of the poace Cleveland regarding- the un just and unoalled for statements of vice consul Laidlaw, of Portland. The Alaska Commercial company has chartered the bark Newsboy, at San Franoisoo, will put a complete cannery outfit aboard and run nau nery this season at Cook's Inlet, Alaska. The Astoria Street railway com pany are going to drive piles 200 feet east from the east end of Water street, and then south to tho roadway, and thus avoid the grado in front of O'Brien's hotel. Talk about "carrying coals to New castle !" "California salmon" is now reoeived from San Pranoisco and sold at fancy prices. That is almost as bad as shipping up salmou cases, as was done a few years back. There are several mentioned for the vaoant secretaryship of the chamber of commerce; among others, J. O. Bo zorth and W. B. Adair. It is a very important and responsible position and should be worthily filled. At tho last regular meeting of As toria Engine Co., No. One. Wm. E. Welton was elected to membership, and a committee consisting of O. J. Curtis, F. Surprenant and Jas. Scott was appointed to make arrangements for a sooial hop. Arrangements aro making for the launoh of The Polar Bear and The Occident, two new vessels, the one to be used in northern waters by the Alaska Packing Co.: the other the property of Denny Ourran, who will use her as a steam launch hero. Yesterday afternoon a young man aged 20, whose name could not be as certained, was seriously injured by a planer he was operating at the West Shore mill. The third and fourth lingers of his left hand were entirely cut on Ine nrat nQ3 second fingers partially severed, and the thumb and wrist badly cut. Jones' cow broke into Smith's yard the other night and ate some grass and things. "I wish you'd keep your cow ont of my shrubbery," said Smith. "And I wish you'd keep your shubbery out of my cow," said Jones. But Jones' cow is liable to get hurt some night, Smith says, and it won't bo with shrubbery, nuthor. The Geo. 17. Elder is being fitted up and will shortly be put ou the Alaska route. It is thought that tne Idaho will not be repaired as she is now under bonds, having been seized and condemned by the government for smuggling and liable to be con fiscated any day and the company not caring to put ou the requisite amount of repairs, Correspondence has been going on for sometime on the part of the dif ferent directors of the Northwestern Firemen's association regarding the time for holding the next tournament. It has been definitely decided that the meeting of the association for '88 will be in Portland on June 18th and 19th, and the tournament on June 20th, 21st and 22nd. The salvation army had a big ad vertisement yesterday in the police court The case of Jas. Kinney, charged with disorderly conduct, was argued according to the law and the prophets, the jury acquitting the de fendant. At the close of the matinee there was another collision, which re sulted in a slight fracas, J. W. Dun lap putting up 810 for his appearance this afternoon to answer to a oharge of assault and battery. The house committee on military af fairs, after argument by congress man Hermann, have favorably re ported his bill providing arms, am munition and equipage to the state of Oregon for the militia. It directs the secretary of war to supply one thous and stand of improved Springfield rifles, also oadet's rifles, bayonets, Bcabbards, Gatling gun and numer ous belongings, inoluding rifle ball cartridges, rifle blank cartridges, etc. The river and harbor committee of the house is reported to be en gaged in making a final revision of their bill, preparatory to reporting it to the house for consideration. The pruning knife is being used in every direction, with u vis w of keeping tho aggregate amount below 821,500,000. Estimates of local engineers run up to nearly SIOO.OOO.OOO, while those of the'obief of engineers foot up 840, 000,000. The house oommittoe will try and shave tho bill down to about 820,000,000. The Contra Costa, Cal., Gazette says: "The salmon season which oponed some four weeks ago prom ised to prove a good one, nnd quite a number of fish were taken, but with in tho past two weeks the boats have not averaged two fish n day. What tuo reason is for the sudden absence or salmon in the river is unknown. but it is attributed to tho large num ber of sealions at the mouth of the Uolden Qate, which pursue and cap ture the fish before they can get up into tne rivers. A RESPONSIBLE OFFEB. Astobia, March 20th. 1888. Editob Astobian Seeing an article in to-day's Orego man in regard to grain shipping, I would like to give the Oregonian a nut to crack. It seems that one of Portland's oldest business men. to wit, Mr. Wiberg and his partner, Mr. Johnston have taken a contract from the government to furnish stone at Port Stevens for 80 cents per ton. This stone is being quarried 14 miles above Vancouver, has to be loaded ou cars on a tramway, run down on a wharf, on the river bank, there load ed on barges, these barges towed to Fort Stevens for the sum of 80 cents per ton, and as I understand it the contract is a large ono, 70,000 or SO, 000 tons. I will make myself responsible to Portland grain and flour merohants it they will give me all the flour and grain to transport between Portland and Astoria at 40 cents per ton for the next six years and be done with so much wind about the bad sailor boarding masters and so much talk about overcharges of towage and pi lotage and the bars on the Willamette and Columbia rivers to be dug out eaoh and every year. Now gentlemen Shipping merchants, put up or shut up. I mean business. J, O. TBULLIKOSit Social Dance at the Armory. A Unique But Reasonable View. A gentloman whoso long residence hero and intimate acquaintance with tho subject lend weight to his opin ion, tells The Astoriax that too much stress is laid upon tho cutting down of timber in this country, and too much attention is paid to eastern ed itorials in regard to the "necossary preservation of our forests." He says that all the magnificent urea of yel low fir. spruce and hemlock is now in its prime, at its best, has attained its maturity and should be cut down. It is better now than it will be ten or twenty years from now, and if it were all cut down the country would suffer no loss, as tho second growth, tho new underbrush, would spring up rapidly and in the course of a gener ation would take the place of the for est giants. He thinks the best thing that could happen this community would be to cut off every stick that has grown to a size warranting its cut ting a very big contract. Opening Day. INFANTILE SKIM DISEASES uur omest caua, now eix jowa ui &?. when an infant six months old wm attacked with a virulent, maliniant sMn disease. Wo had no rest at nisbt.no pence by day. Finally, we wore advised to try tho CimcrJRA Hicukdiks. The effect was simply marvellous. In three or four weeks 1 complete cure was wrought, lenvirg the little fellow's person as whito and hculthy as though ho had never been at tacked.
