The Post-Intelligencer evidently
doesn't like the sheriffof King county.
In twenty-three lines it calls him "a

Talk about "carrying coals to New

reoeived from San Pranoisco and sold
at fancy prices. That is almost as
bad as shipping up salmou cases, as
was done a few years back.
There are several mentioned for the

Jones. But Jones' cow is liable to

it won't bo with shrubbery, nuthor.
The Geo. 17. Elder is being fitted

caring to put ou the requisite amount
of repairs,
Correspondence has been going on
for sometime on the part of the dif

The salvation army had a big ad
vertisement yesterday in the police
court The case of Jas. Kinney,
charged with disorderly conduct, was
argued according to the law and the

number of fish were taken, but with
in tho past two weeks the boats have
not averaged two fish n day. What
tuo reason is for the sudden absence

but it is attributed to tho large num

into tne rivers.
A RESPONSIBLE OFFEB.
Astobia, March 20th. 1888.
Editob Astobian
Seeing an article in to-day's Orego
man in regard to grain shipping, I
would like to give the Oregonian a
nut to crack. It seems that one of
Portland's oldest business men. to
wit, Mr. Wiberg and his partner, Mr.
Johnston have taken a contract from
the government to furnish stone at
Port Stevens for 80 cents per ton.
This stone is being quarried 14 miles
above Vancouver, has to be loaded
ou cars on a tramway, run down on a
wharf, on the river bank, there load
ed on barges, these barges towed to
Fort Stevens for the sum of 80 cents
per ton, and as I understand it the
contract is a large ono, 70,000 or SO,
000 tons.
I will make myself responsible to
Portland grain and flour merohants
it they will give me all the flour and
grain to transport between Portland
and Astoria at 40 cents per ton for
the next six years and be done with
so much wind about the bad sailor
boarding masters and so much talk
about overcharges of towage and pi
lotage and the bars on the Willamette
and Columbia rivers to be dug out
eaoh and every year. Now gentlemen
Shipping merchants, put up or shut
up. I mean business.

A Unique But Reasonable View.
A gentloman whoso long residence
hero and intimate acquaintance with
tho subject lend weight to his opin
ion, tells The Astoriax that too much
stress is laid upon tho cutting down
of timber in this country, and too
much attention is paid to eastern ed
itorials in regard to the "necossary
preservation of our forests." He says
that all the magnificent urea of yel
low fir. spruce and hemlock is now in
its prime, at its best, has attained its
maturity and should be cut down. It
is better now than it will be ten or
twenty years from now, and if it were
all cut down the country would suffer
no loss, as tho second growth, tho
new underbrush, would spring up
rapidly and in the course of a gener
ation would take the place of the for
est giants. He thinks the best thing
that could happen this community
would be to cut off every stick that
has grown to a size warranting its cut
ting a very big contract.
