Because neither of them are worth a good squeeze. The lion and the lamb may lie down together, but they can't hold a candle to a couple of lawyers. "After pleasure follows payin,'' sighed the old-timer as he laid down fifteen cents for a drink. A Connecticut man by the name of Peach overfed his children with watermelon, and it is feared that tho peach crop is ruined. "I'll teach you how to tear your pants! said an irate parent, swing ing a strap; "I'll teach you." "Don't hit me, pa; I know how al ready. Just look at 'cm!" "Pa," said a little boj "what is an absolute monarchy?" "I can't explain it, my son, so that you can comprehend it. Wait until you get married, my son, and then you'll know." The foolish virgin in the Scrip tures came with no oil in her lamp. Now she cometh with a four-gallon can of kerosene to pour on the kitchen hre,and her funeral expens es are added to the loss of tho oil. "Sacred to his memory," said Fogg, reading the legend on tho tombstone of his friend Hawkins. "Why, Ilawkins never had any memory. He never could remem ber anything for five minutes, in his lite." "Are vou going to !mo a picnic this 3-ear?" inquired a youngster ot Ins faunday-hchool teacher. "Why, what do you want of a pic nic?" "Nothing much, but I can get six now scholars in a hurry if you are going to havo one. An Iowa youth was holding his girl in his lap during a thunder storm. The lightning struck and killed the youth, while the girl was left unharmed. We hopn this will teach the young women that tho safebt place during a thunder storm is in a fellow's lap. There was something peculiar in the arrangement of a programme of a young ladies' Bible class re union recently at Manchester, Eng land. One of the numbers appeared as follews: "No. 4. 'Put M in My Little Bed' Miss Aim Fansh.iwu ( iccoinpanieil by t'i curate)." "What are you trs mg to iee, Jack?" asked Men itt in an elevat ed train. "I'd like togetaglimpse of th.it girl's face who has her back turned to us." "Oh, como away! She is as homely as sin." "How do you know?" said Jack "Because she's allowed to stand up," replied Merritt. "When she returned she found the money gone," is a sentence which is stirring up all the good and bad grammar of Chicago. "If it was gone how did she find it?" is the query asked by one side, and, "if she hadn't found it gone, wasn't it there?" inquired tho other. Why not let the matter drop and hunt for tho thief? "Was your husband on the stand yesterday?" asked the lawyer of a woman in a case in which husband and wife were witnesses. "No," she answered with a snap, "ho wasn't on tho stand. He was on the set. That's the kind of a man he h, whenever there is anything to set on from a satin sofy to the top rail of a worm fence." "Say," said Berkey to his wife yesterday at dinner, "you didn't say anything to any ono about what 1 was telling you night before last, did you? That's a 6ecrnt." "xV secret? "Wiry, I didn't know it was a secret," sho replied, kind of regretfully. "Well, did you tell it? t want to know." "Why, no, I never thought of it since. 1 didn't know it was a secret." The state of Sonora, Mexico, lev ies a tax of 2 on every baby born within its limits, and charges the farmer 5 cents for every chicken he raises and 30 cents for every sheep. A Clear Complexion. How can you expect a clear complex ion when the blood Is fall of impurities anil the stomach clogged ? The blood be comes impure because the liver docs not act properly ana woric oir the poison from the svstem. and the certain results are blotches pimples and eruptions. Putify the blood with Simmons Liver Regulator, and regulate the liver, stom ach and bowels, and then the skin will become clear. . Eailroad Movements. Sax Feanciscco, March 20. By some persons it is thought the Southern Pacific company's plan for the construction of a railroad from Montague, on the California & Oregon line, into Nevada, and through to Kelton, Utah, whera it will connect with the Central Paci fic, is for the purpose of discourag ing the Chicago & Northwestern in its efforts to reach this city, and also to cut off the Union Pacifio railroad from seouring the exten sive stock shipments which it ob tains from that part of its territory. Tho construction of such a line would assure the Southern Pacifio companyof a share of Oregon and Washington Territory trade now going by the Oregon short lino and the Northern Pacific. In commenting upon tho report of this intention of the Southern Pacifio company, a well informed man remarked to-day, "Having covered its own territory pretty thoroughly in the building of branch lines here and there, the Southern Pacific now contemplates the construction of several strate gic lines, which are intended to se cure it against invasion. I don't say these roads will aotually be built, but they will bo surveyed with a flourish of trumpets that means to warn invading hosts that they arc treading on dangerous ground. Surveys will bo run and passes held against new comers where eer possible. The compa ny has a strong and well equippod force of onginoers on its road, for which it now has but littlo use except to employ in this Way. The now line from Montague to Kelton may be built in the course of time but if it is only surveyed, and there is great noise about it, it will have ncarlytho same effect upon out side lines seeking entrance here, as if the road were actually con structed and in operation." Ouriou3 Story of an Inventor. They tell a curious story of old Ch'ifetophT Moyor, who was more oi lfi ;th Ives. -Many years ago he was a workman in a facto ry where rubber shoes were made. He received the fabulous sum of SI 2." per day. At night lie w .rkt'd t ul the details of an in veil tsoii for eoLiioniiingin the number of men employed in the factory. One day ho finished his machine, cairied it t l ho shop and showed his boss how noil it would do the work of a dozen or twonty men. The boss was thunder struck; but before he could examine the inven tion Meyer seized a big hammer and knocked its delicate machin ery into chaos. "But I want that," protested the boss. "I know you do," answered tho workman, quietly. "Come and seo me to-morrow noon," continued the head of the firm pompously, "and we will make some arrangements" "If you want to talk business with me," remarked tho workman coolly, "you can come to my lodg ings at 7 o'clock to-night. Bettor not be late." Tho millionaire was there at 7, Meyer was taken into the firm, and in a short time ho was at the head of the business. He lives in New Brunswick, N. J., in a pretentions houso, and his sons aro all well married. A short time ago tho old man he is more than 70 years of age took it into his head to marrv a"ain, picked out a beauti ful 19 year old girl and prepared for the wedding. Immense oppo sition was expected from the whole family, as old Mayer is worth ten or twelve millions; but to the amazement and chagrin of society and the sensational press, all of the old manufacturer's friends, family and connections backed him up heartily, and sent him off on his bridal tour, looking and feeling like a major. jSTcio York Letter.
