Pres ident Cleveland gave a reception to the visiting governors oE the different states in his parlors after the parade was over at 2:30 o'clock last Friday. It was noticeablo that Cleveland and Hill stood apart from the others for some time, and after the president had shaken hands with the other gov ernors and they had retired, Gov. Hill remained, and the president and he chatted and laughed for a Ipng time. This is one of the rea sons why the president arrived late at the Clover club dinner. Gov. Hill and his staff were at the same hotel with the president, and at the former's request Gov. Hill met Mrs. Cleveland, and she was particularly pleasant. Of course, Cleveland and Hill's chatting and laughing and standing apart from the others was talked about by the governors, and it got about the hotel. A prominent Republi can of this state, who has held high offices in the gift of the peo ple, asked one of Gov. Hill's staff that night, while they were stand ing the hotel corrider: "How about Hill for president?" "Oh, that was all fixed in New York three days ago," was the answer. "Hill will not be a can didate. He and his friends will be for Cleveland for renomina te n." The following was published hero this morning. "Before gov ernor Hill left here it leaked out that he is not to be a candidate for president. This was arranged last Tuesday. Ho will support Cleveland and be renominated for governor of New York. Thi3 is the result of the Republicans' ac tion in nominating Fred Grant fqr secretary of state. The Hunters are Sorry, as Usual. Albany, Or., Sept. 19.
