Ct) . r m gaitg IMtoratt. ASTORIA. OREGON: WEDNESDAY. .SEPTEMBEE 21, 1887 Tiiat is a graceful act in the Port land board of trade's sending Villard a congratulatory letter. Courtesy sucli as that is not thrown away, and the Portlandors in this, set an example worthy of imitation. - The subsidy subscription list grows. As published this morning it aggregates 879,650. The Astobiak is authorized to say that 3,250 -will be added to it to-day, -which will make it $82,900, and so it goes. In the meantime "despise not the day of small things." Don't wait for men who have borne the brunt of years of Rhirrtv nflbrt to do it all: eet in all that are willing to subscribe $50, $25, $10, $5: it all helps, and aids grandly in swelling the amount. There are probably 200 men in Astoria -who haven't been asked, who will willingly sign for $25 apiece; hero we have $5,000 mere: another 100 will give $100 apiece, making $10,000 more. Tho first thing, the necessary thing is to raise tho $150,000: till then noth ing can bo done but 'wait. IIekkx Geokge, Edward McGlyhn and other pessimists "who think that poverty and progress go hand in hand are respectfully invited to explain the fact that tho savings in the savings bank of Now York state havo -increased $20,500,000 during the past fiscal year. The total amount of money on deposit is S196,038,000, or nearly $100 apiece for every man, woman and child in the state. There are 1,398,015 open aecounts, which is more than one apiece for every family in the state. Tho deposits in tho savings banks reflect the financial condition of tho common people the people in comparatively humble cir cumstances, the people with small savings, the people who are not in cluded in the term "rich." Henry George declares that tho rich are growing richer and tho poor poorer. These statistics give tho lie to that statement The poor are growing rioher. Some Sealers. The sailing schooner Penelope ar rived last week at Viotoria from Behriug sea, with 1,500 seal skins. She spoke several other schooners and saw the smoke of a supposed rev enue cutter. The run of 2,600 miles from Behring sea to Viotoria was made in 16 days. The schooner Lottie, belonging to James Claplanhon, a chief of thtfMa- kah Indians of JNeah bay, arrived a day or two ago, with 700 seal skins. The Lottie lost two canoes contain ing four Nithriat Indians, whioh were piokod up by a fishing schooner bound for San Francisco. They sighted what was supposed to be a revenue cutter while going through Ounimak pass, but a favoring breeze sprung tip and the Lottie was soon out of sight Tho "sealing sohooner Mary Ellen arrived in Viotoria on the 7th instant from Behring sea, with 2,457 seal skins. The captain reports entering the Behring sea late in June, and leaving August 21st, having experi enced roujrh weather during the whole season. John Jacobson, the first hunter who captured 1,000 seals last year, took 575 this season, and in one day 57. John Arch, another hunter, secured 54. The total catch for one day was over 250. This vessel last year took the largest catoh. The schooner Black Diamond ar rived on the 7th from the Behring sea, with 965 seal skins. The oaptain reports very rough weather, tho ca noes being put out only twelve days. There were plenty of seals, but the Indians were afraid to venture out The schooner Monntain Chief ar rived from Behring sea with 700 seals. Port Townsend Corr. Portland Journal Commerce. In Brief, And to the Point. Dyspepsia is dreadful. Disordered liver is misery. Indigestion is a foe to good nature. The human digestive apparatus iB one of the most complicated and won derful things in existence. It is easily put out of order. GreaBy food, tough food, sloppy food, bad cookery, mental worry, late hours, irregular habits, and many other things -which ought not to be, have made tho American people a nation of dyspeptics. A LETTER FR03I LONDON. The Enslbli Parliament Vastncss of The British Metropolis. Iiokdos, Sept. 1, 1887. " Editob Asteeiak: After a oontinaous round of visiting relatives, whom I had not seen for 40 years, and their descendants, scattered north, oast, sonth and west from "the spot where I was born" every one of whom with true .English hospitality ex pected and urged me to stay a fow weoks instead of the fow days 1 had at my dis posal, I Inst week fjgot to tho end of tho list, and came to this wonderful city for the purpose of winding up my foreign tour and getting a week or two's com parative rest before re-crossing the At lantic. As "all roads led to Rome" when she was mistress of the world, thus is it now with London. In journeying to and from any part of the midland, southern and home counties of England I havo of ne cessity passed through this city, which aooording to Herschol, tho great astrono mer, "is the center of' tho terrestrial globe," but have not till now had tinio to visit such points and places of interest which every observing tourist ought to seo. Through tho kindness of the Hon. Seager Hut, member of parliament for tho district of Mary-le-bono, Loudon, a narsonal friend of one of my nephews, I I had last week tho pleasure and priviledgo lory in the House of Commons and lis tening to tho remarks mado bj some of the government- ministers and other dis tinguished members. Tho exterior of the House of Parlia ment is arohitecturally grand, tho whole pilo covering eight acres and having four irincipal fronts, ono of which is 910 feet ong. Tho Viotoria tower at ouo ex tremity of tho building is 75 feet square and 340 feet high, with an entranco arch way to tho House of Lords 65 feet high. The entranoo hall and lobby rooms through whioh we passea on our way u the room oocupied by the commons when in session, wore very imposing, filled as they are with ranged life sizo statues of some of England's greatest statesmen; the oorridors also are beautifully fres coed, ono of the historical scenes being "Tho embarcation of tho Pilgrim Fathers for New England." After all this grand eur, ono feels on ontorlng tho house where tho members sit in debate, some what disappointed to find a room only 70 feet in length oy i ieec in ureaum auu height, with surrounding galleries, som bro rather than gorgeous in color, with stationary cushioned benches for seats but no desks in front of them for tho convenience of tho members." On tho evening in question though tho opposi tion and tho government wore pitted against each othor on almost overy sub jeot in debate, ono could not but bo struck with amazement at the exceed ingly quiet and conversational manner in which the various speakers addressed tho house. Perhaps this was owing to tho fact that for a wonder tho Irish question was not a portion of tho printed order of business for the evening, and the mem bers who invariably do got excited when this "irrepressible conflict" is being dis cussed were glad of an opportunity to cool off. To ns tho discussions were dry and uninteresting, and having gratified our curiosity to see and hoar wo took our leave in about four hours after entering, though 'the house did not adjourn, as usual, till early morning. In one of his speeches, John Bright, 21. P. for Birmingham, once said: "A great many of you have boen to London, and yet you know nothing about it I have spent six months there every year for forty years, and yet I know nothing about it. I do not believe that there is a man in it who is fairly acquainted with all tho parts and districts of that vast city." Some idea of tho vastness of this city may bo had when wo consider thatit has now within a fifteen milo radius nearly 5,000,000 inhabitants. Its streots placed end to end would extend from hero to New York, neariy 3000 miles. Nearly eight hundred thousand persons, and over seventy thousand vehicles daily enter and leave tho comparatively small area (C32 acres) of tho city of London proper, where every inch of ground is ardently contended for, and whero re cently (in Lombard street) a special plot of land fetched a price equal to ten millions of dollars an acre, what a task to write up such a city! "Who daro try it? A great boon to tho average Londoner is the close competition existing amongst tho various railroad companies in excur sion rates to tho sea sido and various watering plaoes throughout England and Wales. For less than one dollar a ticket can be procured good for 3 days or more, which will convey tho holder to and from Brighton, Hastings, Southsea, Dover, or a dozen othor fashionable resorts from CO to 80 miles distant from tho great metropolis. Thousands, during the sea son, aTail themselves of this privilege, and it is a notable fact that though this year excursion rates havo been reduced 25 per cent, on former rates, tho travel has so increased that the railroad com panies have profited instead of suffered by it. Tho American tourist is not slow to avail himself of the excursion rates. During the season opportunities are given to purohaBO lay over tickets en abling travelers to stop at any point of interest on the lino of tho railroad issu ing them. Tho country is so completely interseotod with railroads that tho indi vidual tourist has no difficulty in map ping out his routo and doing each place of nistorical celobrity or in any way of moro than ordinary interest at his leisure, without encumbering himself with any of the annoyances inseparably connected with a promiscuous tourist party, and at a less expense. The en closed clipping from the London Echo of Aug. 30, states that on a low estimate 90,000 Americans have visited England this year. It was my fortune last Sunday to pro cure a front seat near the pulpit in Mr. Spurgeon's Tabernacle. Tho building is oblong in shape, has three galleries and I will seat 5000 persons. Not only were the seats filled, all tho standing room was oooupied "also. It is wonderful tho hold this good man has upon the people. I think it is because ho is good. Mr. bpurgeon, by his blameless and consist ent life, has lived down all distrust and opposition, vase Bums oi money navo betn given to him subject only to his own control and for which ho has never been called to give an account, but his integrity is unquestioned. Eloquent ho is but not an orator in the goneral sense of that word. His remarkable flow of words and the aptness of his numerous illustrations, which seem to come to his memory unbidden, coupled with an evident affectionate earnestness in his efforts to press tho truth homo to tho hearts of his hearers, arc some at least of the reasons why the people flock to hear him. I had a short intereview and a cordial hand-shake with tho reverend gentleman after celebrating the com rsiumon, aid ho anxiously inquirod how the good work was going on in the far est. e. O. H.
