He pushed bis army through snch a month of censolcs's and seemingly resultles3 battle as the world has hardly ever seon; dealing, however, a.s he knew, the blows from which his antagonist could never recover. In tho "Wilder ness the rebellion received its death stroke. It lingered months after ward, and all tho skill and strength of the nation and ita soldiora were required to push the blade to the heart, but tho iron entered in May, 1S6L But for just this terrific strife, jnst this persistent attack, just this bloody wage, the result would have been deferred or different Qen. lial eau'it Biography of Grant. The Chicago Tribune says of Grant's death that "it is a kindly provision of nature, this law which makes so many die with the dawn. Perhaps it is the instinclivo revolt of the soul against going out to its un known future in darkness which makes it cling to tho body until the light comes, when it departs more happily and hopefully to find what maybe." This explanation is more poetical than truthful. Tho reason for tho excess of mortality at or near dawn is because the suu is the source of life, and at dawn, or shortly after dawn there is less vitality on the earth than during any other part of the day, for tho sun has then been longest absent. An enfeebled consti tution therefore, breaks down when its vitality is lowest. Washington county ia overrun with men seeking work in tho harvest field, or at least with fellows who claim to be seeking work. Although the demand for labor this year is larger than usual, this flood of appli cants has had the effect of "bearing" wages, and the highest price paid for ordinary laborers is only SI per day and board. Some employers have se cured forces at tho rate of ten cents per hour and board, so that when their machines break down or their horses need a rest, the hands are idlo at their own cost. A large force of men aro at work on the Cascado division of the Northern Pacific doing heavy traclrtind tunnel work. Two tunnels jsxtc in course of construction aggregating 750 feet in length. Tho grade is completed t Green river, and it is expected that by September 1st all but seventeen miles of grading will bo finished, and the track laid to the western portal of the big tunnel at tho summit. A large number of swamp land claims in Klamath and Lake counties have been rejected by the commis sioner of the general land ofiico at Washington. These claims aggregato 48,000 acres.
