eau'it Biography of Grant.
The Chicago Tribune says of
Grant's death that "it is a kindly
provision of nature, this law which
makes so many die with the dawn.
Perhaps it is the instinclivo revolt of
the soul against going out to its un
known future in darkness which
makes it cling to tho body until the
light comes, when it departs more
happily and hopefully to find what
maybe." This explanation is more
poetical than truthful. Tho reason
for tho excess of mortality at or near
dawn is because the suu is the source
of life, and at dawn, or shortly after
dawn there is less vitality on the
earth than during any other part of
the day, for tho sun has then been
longest absent. An enfeebled consti
tution therefore, breaks down when
its vitality is lowest.
Washington county ia overrun with
men seeking work in tho harvest
field, or at least with fellows who
claim to be seeking work. Although
the demand for labor this year is
larger than usual, this flood of appli
cants has had the effect of "bearing"
wages, and the highest price paid for
ordinary laborers is only SI per day
and board. Some employers have se
cured forces at tho rate of ten cents
per hour and board, so that when
their machines break down or their
horses need a rest, the hands are idlo
at their own cost.
