San Fkakcisco, June 20 A short time ago a committee, consisting of Dr. Harkness, president of the acad emy of sciences, Dr. Behrand Adolph Sutro, was appointed to devise means of checking the wholesale destruction of salmon and other fish by sea lions. Doctors Harkness and Behr agreed that the sea lions should be extermin ated as far as possible. It was suggest ed that this might be accomplished by shooting the animals at Seal rock that have been admired so much by tourists, and also the animals on the Farallones, these two points be ing the breeding places for this part of the coast. As they do their fish ing at night, and bask in the sun on the rocks during the day, it was thought there would be little diffi culty in destroying vast numbers by killing as many females as possible, which wonld lead to a continual and bloody war among the superabundant males, the desired end wonld be ac complished. Fishermen claim that fully 400,000 pounds of fish per day are devoured in the harbor alone, one full grown sea-lion eating and digest ing iuu pounds even- twenty-four hours. Sutro is opposed to tho de struction of sea-lions, which consti tute a magnificent attraction for tourists.
