Editok Obegexian: May I be allowed to say a word through your extensively read paper to the farmers of your great slate? Through the courtesy of the railroad companies I have been permitted to rido through its entire length, from north to south. I have looked over your beautiful valleys from a practi cal farmer's stand point Over fifty years of my life have been spent on the farm. Born and raised on a farm, among the rocks and hills of New Hampshire, and then for the last thirty years on one in Iowa, I claim that unless I have been a very dull student I should know something of fanning. Unless I am greatly mistaken the farmers ot your stato are having something of the same experience that was so bitter to thousands of our Iowa farmers in not very recent years. Tho great and fascinating idea with many was wheat raising. Coming mostly from the New England states, where the grain crops were always small, the case with which extended acres could be cropped with grain carried most of tho pioneer farmers off their feet, and they continued in the grain raising business until many lost their farms. Some eight or ten years ago we began to agitato the stock and dairy idea among our wheat growing farmers and those who had enough left from the wheat fail ures to get a few good cows, and go into dairy farming are now out of debt and are getting ahead in the world. The cow and tame grass have saved thousands of Iowa farmers from utter bankruptcy. It has struck me while riding over your tine valleys, so ad mirably adapted to clover and the grasses, that if the Iowa farmer, 2,000 miles nearer market, cannot raise wheat only at a loss that the Oregon farmer, in this grand climate so won derfully favorable to the manufacture of cheese and butter, might possiblv be making a mistake in continuing to hold on to the old time habit of grain raising; Wo have to-day in Iowa over ouu creameries where butter is made from the cream gathered for a radius of fifteen miles and upwards around them. Aside from these there are large numbers of cheese factories that make cheese and butter. Then again the number of private farm dairies is legjon, swelling the dairy product of our state to au amazing amount. The product is alwas cash, and as a rule very remunerative find sure. Another thing in favor of dairy farm ing is the fact that the dairy farm al ways increases in fertility while grain raising is alwas depleting. Your mountain streams and springs, your cool, moist climate, and your luxuriant growth of clovers, all tend to make these val leys of Oregon tho very paradise of tho dairyman. Your distance from thej great markets of the world gives a tremendous emphasis to the idea of putting as much value in a pound of product as possible. It costs but very little more to send a pound of cheese or buttor to Liver pool than it does a pound of wheat. The farmer must always remember that he must pay the freight from the farm to the market, be that market where it may. With tho dairy will come the improved hog, and the steer, and with these comes more and richer grass, and this means more stock, and more stock means inde pendence, and with this comes school ing, refinement and good society. I do not say you do not now have refinement and gcod society in Ore gon, but I am writing for my fellow farmers. I have passed through all the privations of pioneer life. Taking a pre-emption in Iowa thirty years ago meant a small beginning. " For seventeen years 1 lived in my little fourteen-foot pre-emption log cabin, and it was the cow and tho milk pail that lifted me out of it. If I read rightly what I have seen in your state, there are thousands of farmers who can see no way how to pay the debts hanging over them and send their children to school, with grain at present prices. I sympathize with these hardy men, and frankly say I can see but little hope for them un less they follow the steps of their Iowa brothers and turn from grain to dairy and stock. This is safe and sure. It may bo slow at first, but in the end there will bo no disappoint ment. The natural growth of your towns and the increase of manufacturing industries which would seem from j'our abundant water power and iu- exhaustablo stores of fuel inevitable, will give a ready market near at home for the dairy products of your farms. Pardon me if I have been too for ward in the expression of my views but so intensely am I enlisted" on the side of the best good of the farm and the farmers' families I could not well resist the desire to give the farmers of these grand valleys tho benefit of tho experience,we of Iowa have gone through. As a member of tho press excur sionists I tender you my sincerethanks for the cordial good will and welcome you have shown us. Our visit among your people will bo tho event of our lives to many of us. L. S. Coffin. Fort Dodge, Iowa. Ceylon spiders weave webs so strong that a walking-stick, when thrown into it, is entangled among the meshes. TIIK CANADIAN PACIFIC. Sax Fbaxciscol Juue 2L Speak ing of the near completion of the Cansdian Pacific railroad, the Call says: "It proposes to carry emi grants from Halifax on the Atlantic, to Port Moody on the Pacific, for Slo. This is the lowest immigrant trans continental rate ever offered. Fur ther, it has fixed $25 as immigrant from Liverpool to the Pacfic ocean. No other overland route and ocean line ever combined to carry passen gers for this snva. from Europe across the American continent. Lit tle has been said of the Canadian Pacific in America, but all over En rope it3 descriptive pamphlets have fallen thick as December snow flakes. It is stated tho line traverses rich ag ricultural fields, for sale at cheap prices. Tne operation of the Canad ian Pacific will exert a powerful in fluence upon American overland roads. In tho first place it will at tempt to divert tho stream of immi gration from the states and territories of this country to the lands of the English provinces. Low rates will undoubtedly bo an inducement to poor immigrants. It is one of the chief interests of American overland roads to settle a large population within their territory, and tho fact that tho Canadian Pacific will carry immigrants from tho Atlantic to the Pacific for $15 will certainly compel a modification of third class rates on American roads. The Canadian Pa cific will also enter the race for the trade of tho Orient. A gentleman connected with the Canadian Pacific said a few days ago that a fast line of steamers wotild bo put on between its western terminus and China and Japan. He said that both the land and the sea route would be shorter than thoso by the southern lines. For this reason it is expected "that the Canadian Pacific will be an active competitor for Pacific coast trade, both east and west bound." Spokane F.vqiiS, June 21. A terri ble tragedy and one which has creat ed the most intense feeling in this community occurred abont 10 o'clock last night. Charle3 Geiger, a tin smith in the omploy of Holleyfc New pert in this city, started for his home abont 10 o'clock, and when abont half a mile out of town was overtaken by a drunken Indian and shot in the back. Tho ball passed entirely through tho body and Geiger fell from his horse and died in a few min utes. Tho shooting was heard by some teamsters camped near by, and on goiug to tho spot they found Geig er in the death throes. A messenger was at once dispatched to the city to inform the officers. A nicnic of the German Concordia society vas being held below the city when tho messen ger arrived, and the announcement of the murder caused the mest intense excitement. Every ablebodied man on the grounds immediately start ed in pursuit of the murderer. Hund reds struck out over tho prairies on foot and every available horse in town was brought out and the coun try scoured for miles around in search of the murderer, but without avail. Royal Mood. We are all kings and queens in this country, and we have a right to as good blood as that which courses through the veins of emperors. If the blood is poor and the cheeks are pale, it is well known that Brown's Iron Bitters is the great tonic which will give color, vigor, and vitality. Mr.M.K. Gibson, of West Point, Miss., says, "I felt weak and debili tated. Brown's Iron Bitters made me strong and well." Sax Francisco, June 21. Denis Kearney announces to-day his inten tion to run for governor of the stale next year, on a workingruen's ticket. The chief plank in his platform will bo that municipalities have the right to regulate the workingman's hours of labor. He says he will make a six months campaign, and adds: "It will bo tho most magnificent campaign ever witnessed in California, and I will bo elected too."
