After paying all bills there is a balance in tho treasury of sixty dollars, which, with a vote of thanks, will bo pre sented to the Ladies' Coffeo club. At a recent shooting match at Seattle, Kirk C. Ward, a newspaper man. mado a score of forty-eight out of a possible fifty with a Springfield rifle, fifty calibre, range 200 yards. This is tho best record of the kind north of San Francisco. Tho graduating exercises of tho third normal class at tho state university at Eugene on tho 17th inst., was attended by a largo audience. Tho valedictory. "What though for us no laurels bloom,'' was delivered by Miss Catherine S. Pow ell, of Astoria. Wni. Dunbar, a well known Portland commission merchant, was convicted last Friday on a chorge of selling oleomar garine without it being labelled as such. This is the first conviction under the new law. The penalty is a fino of not less than $190 nor more than $390. Tho cessationof the steamer mail serv ice between here and San Francisco, brings into prominence the fact that the Northern Pacific Express company, of which Sam'l Elmore is Astoria" agent, will carry letters and packages as usual by all steamers. Make a note of this. A splendid reception was tendered tho Albany firoboys on their return from As toria. After a number of short speeches, interspersed with music, they were in vited to the Exchange holel where an ex cellent lunch had been preptired by the Ladies' Coffeo club. Fully 1000 people at tended the reception. Yesterday's Portland New. was a fino eight-page issue, commemorative of Col. Hamilton's first anniversary, it being a year since he took charge. In the face of ill-will, occasioned by tho incom petency of his predecessor, ho has built up a fino business, and deserves congrat ulation on his ability and success. Mention was made a short time ago of the injury of Jas. Logan, formerly of this city, and McLaughlin and Hammond, three firemen who were crushed by a fall ing roof at tho burning of tho famous Sin Bun Low restaurant a short time ago. It is now learned that McLaughlin has since died. Logan, who was believed to be the worst hurt of the three is thought to be out of danger. The Lurline brought down a big crowd of excursionists over 450 yesterday afternoon, getting hero about 1:30. Tho Hall-street M. E. church had chargo of tho affair. The visitors swarmed around the streets and looked up their Astoria friends nnd acquaintances, and about half-past three started back amid the blowing of whistles, the music of a band, and the cheers of a largo gathering who had assembled on tho docks to see them off. A Victoria dispatch saj-s, tho abscond ing Idaho postmaster, I N. Hibbs, is lodged in jail there. Ho. was brought down from Yale by Constable Hussey, who caught him at Harrison river. When arrested $10,537.15 was found on his person. Hibbs seems perfectly un concerned about his capture, and is of the opinion that tho United States au thorities cannot touch him, and that ho will be allowed to go back to Harrison river where he has a hotel. Tw Hundred Hatrkcye Jaiinialist.s "Who Want to ec Attorin nnd the Paciflr Ocean. A keon-oyed, otear-brained body of rep resentative men and women will bo at the dock at ono o'olock this afternoon to seo our city and the sundown so. They aro from Iowh, and are on a vacation. Thoy represent tho press of tho Hawkeye state. They are all workers and have left thejr offices to come out here and grasp the hands of their Oregon brethren and see what kind of a country we live in, and go back to tell their million read ers what they saw and what they think of it. They have been all over the state and on the Sound, and have been made welcome everywhere, and now on the eve of their departure they come down here, as a fitting finis to a"grand trip, to see Astoria and the mouth of tho great Co Ce lumbia: to see the Pacific ocean, and go baek . ith some of nature's grandest scenes to'hang upon the walls of memo ry's picture gallery. To us Astorians it is a matter of regret that the visit of our friends from Iowa could not be made somewhat longer. We would liko to show them some of our magnificent re sources, the products of the forest and the sea: to be able to take them over some of our countrv and show them the tide lauds now being dyked and re claimed. tJic orchards and frnit farms, that extend into and through the county, the admirable situation of our city on a peninsula between the Columbia and Young's rivers, but their time to-day will be limited, and all that Astoria can'do is to give them a hearty welcome, see that they aro cared for as to food and trans portation, and tnko them to where they can seo the Pacific. When Sheriff Jordan of Multnomah telegraphed Chief Engineer Charters the other day that tho Fourth of July com mittee would offer a prize of 250 to tho winning team in a proposed hose race, wot test, First Assistant J. E. Thomas telegraphed that Rescues would come, Mr. Charters being confined to his houso by sickness. Rescues wrote stating their desire to meet any of tho teams belong ing to tho association in friendly contest, and yesterday afternoon Frank Parker received a letter from Sheriff Jordan, who is evidently desirous of having a match, and whose love of fair play made many warm friends for him in Astoria during the tournament. He says, how ever, that he doesn't think that there can be any race, as there does not seem to be any disposition on tho part of tho valley teams to stand in, and of course if there's only one team to run thero could be no contest. It appears that the Salem boys pro not on deck to any alarming ex tent and will not compete." Tho Astoria fire department is not at all backward in coming forward, as tho following, which was sent last evening, will shew: AsToniA, Juno 20,1835. To Thomas A.
