a) t. gaUg mwau. ASTORIA, OREGON : TUESDAY-...., .FEBRUARY 17. 1885 THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO NEW MAX. Sax Fbakcisco must have its sensa tion. Since the days of stock specu lation, bank failures, suicides, defal cations, peculations, etc., it must bo content "vritb. minor notorieties. Den nis Kearney -svas pretty good for a while, and Pixley is usually in fair health. The Sharon trial was a bonanza but even that has an end. The pres ent sensation is the establishment of UA Stanford church." The president of the Central Pacific, the Southern Pacific, the California Pacific, and several other Pacific railroads, and who has just been elected United Slates senator from California, is about to build a church and "run it" that is his vife will run it. San Franciscans consider it the proper caper and look -with ap proval on the scheme. The fact that it is a unique idea is of itself suffi cient to commend it to the favorable consideration of the devout San Franciscans. The pastor is worthy of the church. He is the "Rev." John Newman. In the good old days when Gen. Grant was president, Mr. Newman had what is styled by the ungodly "a soft thing." He was pastor of the chftrch where the president worshipped and when the duties of his pastorate palled upon him the president created an office inspector of consulates and the Rev. Newman took a trip around lhc.worid, taking two years to do it and drawing a little matter of SBjOQO a year and expenses. Some time after his return he took charge of a New York city church, but was obliged to ldave by objecting trustees. He was temporarily lost to sight till he bobbed up in San Francisco about two mouths ago, where ho preached a funeral sermon at the funeral of Mr. Stanford's son. His style so impressed the millionaire that it was determined a church should bo established and he installed as its pastor. Eminent divines say that he is not a godly man; that he is not orthodox; but that doesn't make any difference in San Francisco. The church vill be comfortable, the singing of the best, the services cilt-edged, and, best of all, there will be no contributions ex pected. There will bo no pew rentt no passing of the plate, no gentle re minder that salvation is free but it costs like all get out to run a church. None of these disagreeable features will exist The whole business will be free to all, and without money and without price all may enter and hear the word of Newman. A man, even if ho be an unfortunate millionaire, has a right to do as he pleases pro vided ho doesn't interfere with any body else's right to do as he or she pleases, and Senator Stanford has a perfect right to endow a church and run it if he so desires. Indeed, in contrast with Sharon, Ealston, Blythe and other California debauchees, the ex-senator's good deed shines in a naughty world. There is less canned salmon on the Columbia river to-day than at any other time for the last ten years. The price of salmon is now about 15 per cent less than at the correspond ing time last year, but this falling of! is probably more owing to sympathy with other food products and other articles of manufacture than any thing else. If the prices of sugar, wheat or any other staple commodity are compared with the prices of them one year ago it will be seen that the depreciation is more marked than in salmon. Sugar is probably 26 per cent lower, wheat 40 per cent, lower than ono year ago, and the fact that salmon has depreciated so little, in the face of all the drawbacks enu merated above, proves how strong a , hold it has on the trade. It has probably maintained its value better than almost any other article of food consumption, except those which have been favored by a failure of the crop m certain localities. Up' in Boise City, Idaho, they got to fighting about politics last week and among other arguments some of the crowd gutted and sacked the of fice of. the Republican newspaper. Then an attempt was mado to set fire to the office of the Democratic newspaper. The dispatch naively says "There is great exoitemeut" W. P. "Wojiack and family of Win ters were poisoned and made danger onsy sick by partaking of canned salmon last Friday evening. S. 1?. Chronicle, 11. This is another warn ing to those Sacramento canners who try to work off their half-putrid fish. A Geo. Augustus SaiiA, the London journalist, is lecturing in San Fran cisco. His initials indicate the sub- 'stance" of the discourse. The abandonment of the wheat growing industry in England, says the London Miller, would be one of the most momentous events of mod ern times, yet we seem to be in measur able distance of such an event Brief ly, it may be said that the English farmers have for sometime perceived the desperate character of wheat growing, but that now they are perceiving more they are begin ning to see their way out of wheat growing. In Ireland wheat growing has gone down 25 ner cent in a single year, and millers must face the chance of a similar decline in Great Britain. For millers the out look is a serious ono. So large a por tion of American wheat is now sent to us in the form of flour, that an ex tensive dependence, on the United StateB is a matter which English mill ers are gravely concerned to prevent Senator Dolph was right in say ing the improvement of the bar was "not a local matter." It concerns ev ery one in the northwest; every owner of shipping in every part of the world; every man that follows the sea for a living; every shipper in every port; it is a question of international import ance and one in which commerce in every clime is interested.
