Prescriptions carefully Compounded p A LAND OF l'EXINSTLAS. Four Clatsop, Feb. 3. ly-J.",. Editor Oregonlon : Clatsop counfy, and eapepialh that part of it within a radius of twenty miles of Astoria, presents mau phy siological and meteorological features of rare interest. Topographically it is a land of peninsulas. Beginning with the shore of the Pacific ocean at Tillamook head and extending north ward to Point Adams, we have the western bonndcry of a p?n insula, whose eastern Jimit is the .Lewis and Clarke river, which heads in Saddle mountain, a peninsula of about three miles in width and twenty miles in length, and ranging all the way from the level to perhaps 500 feet in height. Bordering the Pacific there is a plain of one mile in width, composed of low sand dmies, and mostly covered with a thick growth of rich grass. The hills are composed of indurated clay of lacustrine origin, and aro clothed with a dense growth of hem locks and spruce, with some cedar and fir. The undergrowth is composed mostly of young hemlocks, huckle berry, salad, salmonberry, thimble berry, ferns, etc., which, in connection with the down timber, form a jungle absolutely impenetrable, except on foot in the most laborious way. No horse could even make a hundred yards without the way having been prepared by an axman. This under growth is green at till seasons of tho year, but few of the shrubs dropping themselves iu the fall. The ferns sometimes reach from four to six feet in height, and the ground is carpeted with a mat of moss of great variety and beauty. To the lovers of jungles this forest of soft to hago and ferns presents m summer a scone of rare beauty and interest, ospecially when the bushes are laden with red, blue and black fruit of different kinds and the golden sun light lies around in patches over the soft moss that every where abounds. Ono would not real ly look in such a place for a great profusion of animal life, but such is not the case. On the contrary, vege table life seems to havo proven the 'fittest," as it is rare that anything is seem, among the higher types of life other than the small brown or striped squirrel. Occasionally a black bear is hear to crash among the logs and brush. A few small birds flit hero and there, almost noiselessly among tho brush and trees. A few have a sweet song not unlike the canary. One specimen that stays among tlie tops of the tall trees in summer sends forth a beautifnl shrill note, that may be heard for a long distance. I have never seen it. Those who claim to have seen it say that it is the gor rulus crhtatus, or blue jay. This I am inclined to doubt, for how could so sweet a tone come from such a source? Large snails and frogs abound, nnd insect life is abun dant, especially the flea and gnat But one is impressed as he traverses these dark, trackless forests, with their strange death-like silence, with the want of the balancing of the forces of life. It is said that elk and deer in former times were very abundant in these forests, but the rapacity of man has slain them and driven "them to more secluded places. The hills are steep and precipitous, two canyons sometimes terminating abruptly on opposite sides of a ridge, not over six hundred feet through, and per haps it is 150 feet from the summit of the ridge to the bed of the canyoD, making the hills very abrupt. Gla ciers during tho ico age had evident ly done their work, owing to the thorough protection of the snrface of the ground by the dense growth of vegetation. Erosion is almost en tirely suspended at the present time. Between the Lewis and Clarke and Young's river is a similar peninsula to the one just described, except the seashore of about three miles iu width and some fifteen miles in length, terminating at Young's bay, and between the Columbia river and Young's river and Young's bay is another pemnsuta, terminating at Smith's point. On this Astoria, "tne future emporium of the northwest,' is situated. The same general de scription as applied to the first or Point Adams peninsula, as to its ge ology and life, will apply to the other two named. These peninsular ridges, composed mostly of indurated clay, were formed in ages past when a vast lake, 700 or 800 feet deep, occupied this region. The rivers flowing into it dropped their sediment on either side of the current produced by the rivers flowing into tho still waters of the lake, and thereby gradually built them up in their present form, modi fied, of course, by the lnpse of time. Standing on tho high hills back of Astoria of a bright clear day it is sel dom one sees a more pleasing land scape and waterscape than is present ed in every direction tho dark wooded hills and mountains, the rivers, the bays, the ocean, with its commerce all in one picture. The climate of this region is eccentric and peculiar; in many respects it is the best climate in Oregon. "While eastern Oregon is buried in snow, and Portland and the "Willamette valley are hidden in fogs and bitten by frosts, here the soft Chinook blows, the sun shines, the grass grow3, the air is spicy and full of health and life. And yet it is not always a par adise. For the past three days the wind has howled and surged and moaned, the ocean has thundered and sobbed by turns, the very heavens seem shut down on all surrounding objects, and the air is thick with falling water. Under such circumstances without the Oft ! noiiian one's spirits go clear down! jto tht melancholy point. The thefts have been a source of great trouble to the people living along the route, and loud and often vere the complaints sent in to the department to look up the matter and punish the ; robbers. Ho tho, be convicted, he acknowledged the thefts had been committed in his office but stated that his daughter was guilty of them all, he having no hand in the transactions in any way, shape or manner. Lt was a terrible reveia tion but at first was not believed by the officials, but upon arresting tliPt girl, she stated that she perhaps was J gmltv, bnl had acted solely under, her fathers direction. This the fa- ther denied, nnd stoutly asserted that the girl was individually responsible ( ior tno deeus, ue naving noiumg whatever to do with it, and that if freedom was guarantead him he wonld testify against and help con vict her. Contrary to his expecta tions, this proposition helped to in crease the father's chances ot going to the penitentiary. The story of the girl is believed, and while it is con ceded that she took the money uuder her fathers direction, it is also be lieved that she is pleading falsely to taking all the money to help shield him. As the father aud daughter aro both iu different portions of the jail and are not aware of the fact that: either one has confessed, it only adds. to the horror of the case, to seo the girl endeavoring to protect her father, and the father wildly trying to heap curses on his daughter in order to save himself, it is understood now that au effort will be made to clear the cirl on the ground that she was not responsible, and send the father up for life, not only on account of the theft, but because of his perfidy. -Sunday llen-ury. This influence drags its vic tims down into the Slough of Despond, and gives them awful visions of the future .Brown's Iron Bitters is the grand tonic which builds up the forlorn system, and raises suffering victims of malaria to the highest en joyment of complete health. It cures liver complaint and corrects all kid ney trouples. Much ridicule has been pointed at Sir William Harcourt, who has. a small regiment of detectives follow ing him everywhere. It is said that Sir "William enters and leaves his res idence by a private door, has all his letters and packages examined by a chemical expert before touching them and is in a state of pitiable personal alarm.
