Extraordinary Charle George Gordon "aa lorn at Woolwicli, January' 23, 1833. He passed bis younyerdays in the Ionian Islands, -where his father was in com mand of the artillery.- He was edu cated at Taunton and then passed to the Royal military academy at Wool wich. He graduated with honors, and in 1852 was gazetted second lieu tenant in the famous scientihc corps. the Royal engineers. He still lacked six months of being, twenty years of age when he began his military career. In August, 185L he was or dered to Corfu, but in December his route was changed for the Crimea, and New Year's day, 1855, he sailed into the harbor of Balaklava. It was the middle of the terriblo "black winter;" misery, disease and discon tent prevailed everywhere. He ac companied the expedition to Kin barn and took part in the reduction of' that place, after whicb he returned to the Crimea and remained there un til February, 1856. At the close of tho war he was reported as an officer who had'dono gallant service and was deserving of promotion. He was awarded tho "legion of honor," but he did not get his captaincy until three years after the Crimean war. Ho went to China in 1860, and wit nessed tho burning of tho Summer palace at Peking. In lb62 he was still in China in command of a com pany of Hoyal engineers. The Taip mgs were troublesome in the neigh borhood of Shanghai in tho early part of that year, and it was decided to begin actito military operations against them. Gordon dispatched 900 men to the Taku forts, and, having been assigned to the com mand of the district, soon joined them. He stormed Sing Foo and drove the Taipingsfrom their strong holds. He assumed command of the ever-victorious army March 25, 1863. "With a comparatively small army, made u of men of the-"worst charac ter, Europeans in part, tho scum of the world," Gordon achieved wonders. For the captnre of Fushan and Chan zu ho -was made a Tsung Ping, or Chinese brigadier general. With the fall xf Nankin the rebellion wnsii stamDed out Gordon returned to England in I860 and was appointed commanding royal engineer at Qravesend. He held the position until 1871, when he was sent to the Danube as British commissioner. He took up his residence at Galatz. He left Galatz In 1873 and entered the service of the Khedive. He was appointed to succeed Sir Samuel Ba ker as governor-general of tho Sou dan. Upon his return to England he was selected as private secretary to Lord Eipon, who had just been ap pointed Viceroy of India. He did not hold the position longpand then went to China. His next services was a commander of the colonial forces at the cape of Good Hope a position which he gave up because of the con viction of tho premier of the cape col ony that bis continuance in office "would notbeconduoivo to public in terest" Gordon, after his return from the cape, went to Palestine and settled outside of Jerusalem. He was recalled from bis retirement by the British government by reason of the troubles in Egypt, and January 19, 1883, the news was spread through Great Britain that Gen. Gordon had left for the Soudan, having, according to Lord Granville's letter of January 18th,accepted a mission "to report on the military situation there, to pro vide in the best manner for the safety ot the European population of Khar toum, and of the Egyptian garrisons throughout the country, as well as for the evacuation of the Soudan, with exception of the sea-board." It was the morning of Taesday, Feb ruary 18, 1884, that Gen. Gordon made his entry into Khartoum. Since then unprecedented interest has cen tered in his personality, and his death wnicn is now placed beyond doubt, is universally mourned. X Sad Career. The divorced wife of a Bonanza millionaire recently came to a mourn ful death principally from taking chloral, which unsettled her mind and demoralized her whole physical system. She had been weakly and ailing and felt her need of something to drown her sorrows and brace her up. Had she taken Brown's Iron Bit ters she would have been invigorated so that she could have fought sorrows off, and enjoyed healthy life. Formerly, the state of Mauchooria, which sup plied China with its present dynasty, extended northward as far as the fifty-eighth parallel. But less than thirty years ago Russia pressed so closely and so heavily on tho north ern frontier of the Chinese dependen cies that the Chinese government was glad to secure a respite by ceding to Russia all Mauchooria north of the Amoor. A few parties are inclined to sell for less than the going price. It is a bad move, for once get the price down it not so easy to get it up, and the sup ply of good oysters is not equal to the demand. Also it has the effect to place on the market a poor quality of oysters from the natural beds as well as getting even the best in a shelly, careless condition.
