A first ward resident thought yesterday that his coal pile looked small and wou erod till he found his four-year-old boy pitching big chunks over into tho water "just to see it splash." Grading lots on tho hillsido is always a serious problem tp lot owners in Asto ria. A resident of upper town who owns some property near the Columbia can ning Company, has hit upon a novel and effective way of grading. Ho first built a flnmo and then a bulkhead, or, maybe it was tho bulkhead that was built first and then the flume. Anyway he is sluic ing down the top of his upper lot onto the top of his lower lot, and equalizing the surface of the earth that way. Ho has a good head of water, some 3,000 in ches, and the way the stream undermines and carries away the earth is in swift comparison to tho shovel and wheelbar row. On the flumo in big letters is (or should be) tho word '"Heureka!" Hfoliee. The regular meeting of the Astoria Ladies' Coffee Club will be held at the residence of Mrs. N. Clinton, Friday, Feb. Tho San Francisco Music and Drama gives Frank Pixley of the Argonaut a rough deal. Ostensibly writing about "tho press,' it says; "It is a well established fact that tho press is a power of mora than ordinary force. It is so powerful that it requires a man of great and noble nature to guide it. It is the exponent of public opinion. It is a power for good and evil. It is the guardian of tho unprotected It is tho censor of the evil-doer. In the hands of tho unscrupulous and unprincipled man, a newspaper is a cer tain instrument of evil. It is a oower that should bo handled as carefully as the most dangerous explosive. Tho press of America is. nnforf nnntAlT' in ihn Immlc of men without principle, and in numer ic ua ii&ua wjiuuuii uuucauon mat is, without education sufficient to conduct a newsnaner. Thn Arlnp'lHnTi nrvnaanrr fnr such a task is as much a moral as a lingual or a mathematical one. A man may be abla to construct, KPnf.onr.niJ nfwr1inrr in grammatical rules; he may be ablo to solve tho mysteries of the differential calculus, but if ho has not morality, con science and honor, his other accomplish ments are valueless, though allied to im- amnarion nnu tnn mannst. tnrm nf fnimi. tious expression. A writer may be a wit and an unnrincinled blaokmiard nt the samo time. An editor may express lofty views on ono question anu bo tho slave of a monopolist on another. To be a roally good editor, a man must be guided by principles of morality; and when wo say morality, wo mean that ho must apply tho golden rule to his own conduct, an'd censuring bis uoighbors for tho crimes of which ho himself is guilty will not earn for him tho respect of his fellowmcn. Denouncing tho teachings of a certain religion while he himself is a known dis believer in all religions, will not win for an editor the respect or esteem of his fel low citizens. An acrimonious stylo will not earn for him tho nameof satirist, for satire, to bo effective mnst be polished. Tho metaphorical mud of an editorial blackguard will soil, but its effects aro early brushed off. Waiving all personali ties, it may be said that there aro several editors in this town to whom tho forego ing remarks aro justly applicable." Pixleys reply to tho above will be in teresting reading. TIN PLATE. Several of our contemporaries have simultaneously become possessed of a desiro to do some tinkering with tho tar iff on tin plate. They aro clamorous for a reduction of tho tariff, and a number of them are strenuous in their demand that our representatives shall urge upon congress tho advantages of tho admission of tin plate entirely free of import duty. As a rule our exchanges attempt to strengthen thoir arguments by equivocal references to the benefits to accrue to the industry by tho removal of tho dutv. Asido from the fact that our canners use the larger part of tho 250,000 or 300,000 boxes of tin plate annually imported on this coast they have not tho slightest in terest in tho proposed reduction of the tariff, or in the discussions of our ex changes. In suport of our position we present ino ionowing tacts gathered in conversation with nromincnf, Mrmnra and tin plato importers, who though ex perienced ousiness men, make no preten tions to the possession of any remarka ble decree of riDGnosa for tli mn ador ation of tho treaty, or of the transforma tion oi mo tanir. The import of tin nlata to this coast is f mm 9-UVnnn tn 300,000 boxes annually. Tho duty is ono cent a pound, or from $1.10 to $1.11 a oox. uutsiao or tho canning industry tinnlate is verv little nsw". Tf tin nlnfn was admitted free, tho cannfira nronlri offset the advantago thus obtained by a reuueuon in mo price oi their goods. Such are tho teachings of experience. The consumer would receive a trifling benefit, and the government would lose a cood sourco of revenue. Thn ennnorn are not interested in tho price of tin plate as long as it can bo obtained at a cost which nprmits of its una na n nnrlr age. Tho difference in the cost of tin piaio iaus upon tno consumer ana not upon tho canner. As a rule cheap sup- nlifis nrn flnlrimnnfnl tn mrtinniril in dustries. Manufacturers mako bettor pronts when material is hold at high prices. If tin was manufactured in this countrv of course the .tnation trnnli" h entirely changed and thoso facts could uui Huniu. a reuueuon in tne taritt would benefit tho English manufacturer, who already practically enjoys a monop oly of tho world's trade in tinnlate. Ho now chows the cud of reflections, which must be bitter enough. Mrs. Dudley's act rivals that of Charlotte Corday."
