The United States uses three times as mnch paint as any other country. Gihls of a marriageable age in Japan are computed to be worth $16 each. English detectives have been in specting the passenger lists of the several steamship lines in New York for several days past The ice bridge at Niagara this win ter is said to be the most massive for many years, and it is estimated to be over sixtv feet thick. It is estimated at the treasury de partment that there will be a decrease of over $5,000,000 in the public debt during the present month. The suggestion is made that St John should petition the Kansas leg islature to change his name, dropping the uSaint,'' and making it "Cheap John." It is said that thero are over 40,000 Irish people out of work in London, and fully one-tenth of them have been discharged since the recent ex plosions. Tiiavel by steamer is safer than re maining at home. The records of the year past show that only one person out of 2,G3G,923 that traveled by steamer lost their lives thereby. Organized cynicism has reached the point of a society founded for the express purpose of discounten ancing the celebration of Christmas, New Years and other anniversaries in England. Recently a bet was made and won that the president of Harvard college could not name four vice-presidents of the United States inside of three minutes, It took him seven to name "Wheeler and Colfax. New York city is said to contain 5,000 disciples of the hot water cure, who drink water almost boiling hot every morning before breakfast. They denounce the drinking of cold water at any lime of dav. During the year 18S4, 83,051 persons died in London, or 223 a day. This gloomy record is made darker by a statement that during the same year in London the sun shone brightly on only about sixty-live days. San Francisco has trouble about a proposed new charter. The papers say the new city hall cannot be fin ished until there is a new charter. There seems to be a sporadic element in this matter of charter discussion. On the island of Formosa, when anj- one is taken sick he is strung up bj' the neck and let down with the "dull thud" common at executions. This performance is intended either to kill or cure the unfortunate patient. Tiie cost of carrying a bushel of corn from Chicago to New York by lake and canal was, in 18GS, twenty five cents, and by all rail forty-two cents. In 18S2 these figures were reduced to eight and fourteen cents respectively. Hard times in New York state have affected the churches and the economy of reducing or doing away with church choirs has been necessitated. A favorite plan is the forming of young people's choruses to lead the congre gations in the hymns. A sentiment is growing in Iowa that unless the prohibitory law can be enforced it had better bo repealed. Even the Des Moines Register, which earnestly advocated the adoption of the present law, does not favor keep ing it on tho statute books if it proves a failure. Commenting on the refusal of the senate to ratify the Nicaraguan treaty the Oregonian tersely sums up the situation in the assertion that ''it is not by any means the first alliance between the south ern confederacy and England, against the interests of the United States." Early marriages are popular at Tennant's Harbor, Me. A girl of 13 was married thero December 6th. MoBtof the girls are married between 12 and 15 years of age, and it is said to be nothing uncommon to find in the same family parents and from one to four children drawing school money. "The Hudson Bay Company may yet prove the commercial salvation of Canada," sajs the Toronto Mail. A party sent to find how long in the season the bay could be used for navigation has discovered iron, lead, gold, silver and copper ores in what promises to bo abundance, and great expectations are forming. A bilii was recently introduced into the Now York legislature, "making it unlawful for any packer or dealer in canned or preserved food to offer the same for sale unless the cans or jars shall plainly bear the name and placo of business of the firm, person or cor poration that packed tho articles, together with marks indicating tho grade or quality of the articles and the year in which they were canned." All violations are made misdemean ors, punishable with a fine of S500 in the case of manufacturers, and for vendors, S50. - ' ' - According to the New York Trib une, Mr. Blaine's new book is in such demand that it is with difficulty that printing-honso and bindery are keep ing up with it. The author is already vigorously at work on the second vol ume, which promises to be even more valuable than the first. Perhaps the liveliest testimony to the merits of this unique historical work is tho fact that through the most fiery of modern political campaigns it has es caped attack. Its candor, its accu racy, its strict impartiality, and its brilliant style have disarmed and won to admiration even tho bitterest of its author's critics. It is having a sale extraordinary in tho history of subscription books, and tho profits both of author and publisher have been great. NEW TO-DAY. ers es.
