Miles left for Gray's Harbor yesterday. She goes to Tilla mook on the 28th inst. F. M". Getchell and J. F. Bar rows, are in the city. They return to Parkersburg this week. A. Noltner, proprietor of the Portland Standard, was a passenger on yesterday's outgoing steamer. The Kate F. Troop, now duo at this port, is reported chartered to load salmon for Liverpool at 55 shil lings. The California Grocer and Ganner has entered upon its fifth year. It is a good trade journal and seems free from bias in its statements. The Ocean Grove property re cently placed in the hands of Bozorth & Johns, of this city, was yesterday disposed of at advantageous figures. On londay evening next, Sol Smith Russel will appear at Occiden tal Hall as "Tom Dilloway" in "Edge wood Folks," supported by a talented company. Reserved seats at the Xow York Novelty Store. The attention of many has been attracted to the white spots on the new Odd Fellows' building. Dr. Jos. Leidy, president of the Acedemy of Natural Sciences, says: "The efflores cence is simply Epsom salts, or sul phate of magnesia." The C. Southard Jfulbcrt. is finish ing her cargo of salmon for New York at Kinney's cannery. She will be loaded by Friday. The Aliec was putting on 2,000 cases from the Ocean Canning company, yesterday; to-day goes on 2,500 from the Astoria Pack ing Co. ; 3,000 from the Anglo-American; 1,000 from Point Adams, and 2,000 from the L X. L. There is a report regarding the placing of another vessel on berth to load salmon for New York. Such will probably bo done, if sufficient freight can be guaranteed. The rate would doubtless bo low, and it would certainly be a good idea for those who have more fish on their hands than they can dispose of, to put it into marketable shape and sent it east. , Tiger Engine Company No. 2, of S&lem, have passed resolutions re questing the board of directors of the Firemen's Association of Oregon to reopen proceedings by which decision was rendered in contest between them and Linn Engino Company No. J, of Albany, relative to trial of steam fire engines at the recent tour nament, and to grant them a hearing relative thereto. Wo are in receipt of a communi cation from a resident of Barneys Point, in which said resident wants it distinctly understood that the goods recently captured at that point were brought there by Astorians, taken away by Astorians, claimed by Astori ans, doubtless owned by Astorians, and that Barney's Point and its dwel lers should be freed from all implica tion therein. postmasters are directed by the department to advise the public that in sending newspapers, books, pamph lets and other articles by mail to foreign conntries, or to distant points within the United States, the ad drq .TinnM nlvrnv- Iia nUonA on J j r. articles inclosed as well as on their wrannpn! The building will be of brick, with a stone founda tion, with accommodation for six stores, two facing on dishing Court, two on West 9th and two on Water streot. Public School Teachers. At a meeting of public school direc tors, district No. 1, held last Monday the following teaehors were elected for the ensuing school ear: Mrs. Florence Martin, principal, $100: Miss Carrie Fields, assistant, $75; Miss Kate Connolly, $70; Miss Dora Budol lette, $65; Mrs. Ella Habersham, SG0. The Cathedral at Cologne is com pleted. It was begun in 1243. There is hope yet for the Skipanon road. Holden's auction alo at lO-J'O . M. to-day. Before the sale of clothing commences, a small lot of second hand furniture, including two lounges and nearly new carpel, will be disposed of. After Septembor 1st, eastorn mail for Oregon, Washington Territor, British Columbia and Alaska will come by the North orn Pacific to Portland, instead of via Sacramento, Itedding and thence overland, an arrangement which makes a great reduction of time. The cac of Mes3rs. Wiseman & Constance, and ftobt. Wilgron, charged with violation of ordinanco 172, came up in the police court yesterday. In onch case tho jury summoned brought in a verdict of guilty, and the judge imposed a fine of fiftv dollars and costs. No. 28 engine was out last even ing testing some new hose. Three simultaneous streams wore thrown, and the test appeared to be a very satisfactory one. The hose is very strong, and from its peculiar con struction,being made of braided cotton with rubber lining, lies flat m the reel. On the Sacramento river the salmon run is just sufiicient to admit of packers keeping their doors opon, though all claim to be losing money. Sacramento salmon, river packed, are in strong hands, hurim been pur chased by two firms, ami are being held for full figures, although small lots are changing hands. There is quite a movement in these goods, but we doubt if it represents actual sales at the figures mentioned. Wo are rather of the opinion that they are being shipped to the various distri buting centers for a future market Prices show no change from previous quotations. California Grow a)td Canncr. For some time past the woods near the White House have been set on fire rather mysteriously about every week and large quantities of cordwood burned besides tons upon tons of charcoal belonsin" to the Oswego Iron Co. Efforts were made in vain for a long time to find out how tho fires originated, but until this week in vain, when it was dis covered that Chinamen had been quietly burning ihe wood as fast as they cut it so as to prolong their job through tho winter, well knowing that the company would bo obliged to have wood and were paying a good price for the cuttinji of it. TEE SALMON SEASON OP 1883 But thirteen days of the present fishing season remain, and there is not tho remotest probability that in tho minds of any ono of the thirty-eight canners exists any desire to fish be yond the limit prescribed. Indeed, it is a question what the inducement is to can now, except it be the sudden influx and correspondingly low price. Many of the canneries contomplate closing, and it would seem as though nothing but tho force of habit kept them running this week. It is proba ble that the close of the present week will see ihe end of the season as far as canning is concerned. The present season has been most singular in every respect. Starting with an unprecedented amount of gear, with a most unfavorable market, an inability to effect satisfactory sales, and a general belief in a short catch, the canneries havo throughout been in a most unsatisfactory posi tion. Tho price of fish was set at tho start at a figure considerably in ad vance of tho price paid last season. Tins had the effect of bringing up suf ficient fishermen from the Sacramento to catch during May and Juno all that came into the river; during these months an attempt was made more than once to lower the prices, those who had their all in the business being unable to see how the high price of the raw material and the low price of the marketable article left any margin for profit. From seventy-five cents to one dollar w:is paid for fish, and all that has been packed up to recent ly, cost, on an average, ninety cents a fish. Up to June loth it was believed by many that the pack would not exceed 400,000 cases: probably it would bo just as well, taking everything into consideration, had events made good the prophecy. But the increased number of canneries and the extraor dinary diligence manifested in catch ing the fish ran the figures up rapidly, so that on the 1st of this month, there was 3-10,500 cases reckoned as being put up; the pack for the season of '82, to same date being reckotied at 292,- 912. From the way the salmon have been coming in since the 1st inst., more especially during the last week, it is evident that the pack will be fully up to last season's figures; should tho canneries all run to their full capacity to the 1st of August, this seasons pack will exceed that of 'S2. It is not their intention. Tho gen eral idea seems to be to fill all the cans on hand, or at least to use up all the tin plate in stock. Several of the canners have refused iish this week, except to a certain limit. Other, who are short of cans, take a specified number, and when they are disposed of spend the remainder of the day in making cans. Tho extraordinary run of this month has not been equaled in size and numbers since 1879. It has been no uncommon thing for fishermen to bring in a hundred to the boat, and of course, the price at once fell. Since Monday, fish have boon selling at figures far below what would have been looked upon as a fair price twenty days ago. Thirty cents, and from that to fifty, has been the figure, and on yesterday's steamerwent alargo crowd of fishermen who refused to catch t those prices. The state of affair is very unsatis factory. A man who has invested a arge amount of capital, and who has been tilling nis cans with ninety cent usii nil the season, can not fuel very complacent over matters when they come swarming in now m such num bers as to exceed the capacity of tho canneries to dispose of them, and at tho same time the question in his mind whether it is best to keep on even on thirty cent fish, or to knock off alto gether, and quit for the season. Wc do not wliolly agreo in tne opinion that the knowledge that thero is an unusual pack on the Columbia river this season is going to koep tho price of fish down. The market for salmon both in this country and in England, depends, of course, primarily, on the price at which it leaves the house of the retailer, but it depends in a greater degree, upon tho demand. In tins particular, fortunately tor our staple, the demand is a growing one. A good many exaggerated reports have been made concerning the largo stocks now on hand in England. These stocks aro not as largo .-is repre sented, and it will be the 1st of No vember before this season's pack reaches England. The large percent age which, this season, goes on con signment, renders this an important item in its final disposition. Of course to those who have male tales, the matter is final. The present result of the season that is now closing will have great in fluence on future business. It will tend to legitimize the business and make it partake more of tho nature of usual lines of trade than has heretofore been characteristic The time has gone by when a man could mate a fortnnu iu one- season on the Colum bia river, but the time will never be when by the same care and diligence applied to ordinary branches of trado. a man cannot make money.
