NEW TO-DAY Jordan ASTORIA, OREGON: WEDNESDAY JULY 18, 1883 Auction Sale pa Presidential Candidates. The Y. Titnes having ad dressed 400 letters to different parts of the country asking opin ions relative to the strength of various parties as coming presi dential candidates, publishes a long list of those who seem to be favored by mention of their names. From the answers receivedtJBlaine seems to be the choice of the Re publicans and Tilden of the Demo crats. In comment on the an swers" received, the Times says: "The gentlemen to whom our inquiries have been addressed have, in every case, good means of learning the political prefer ences fn their neighborhood. In manT cases they have very superi or means of doing so. In every instance we believe their reports are candid and careful, so the read ers will ie struck with the singu lar vagueness of the replies con cerning the Democratic preference. It is obvious that the first con sideration is availability, and the indispensable condition in every case is clear that the the candidate shall not have been intimately connected with Democratic meas ures for a dozen years at least, and that he shall be able to be inde pendent of Republicans, who par ticularly dread and detest these measures. That is not a very strong position ior any party to occupy, but it is the one un mistakeably indicated by our hun dreds of correspondents. In the Republican party there is less of the definite tendency to wards even an approximate choice. Such as there is inclines toward Blaine, who is 'in a strong Repub lican section and has decidedly more popularity than any other Republican now or recently in public lile. The condition of the Republican party, as suggested by this vast amount of correspondence, is to a great extent exactly oppo site that of the Democracy. Mere ly negative availability will not unite the party, unless matters shall change. It is plain that the full Republican strength can only bo brought out 03' a man of posi tive character, trustworthy, pure, widely known and as widely re spected. m It is not a question of reconciliation, soothing wounded jealousies, or combining . partisan or personal ambition; it is a ques tion of finding a man who will sat isfy the conscience of the party. Stcuceon's e:s arc bought on ft from the fishermen at Pentwater, Mich., at lr cents a pound, put up in kegs by a patent process, and shipped to Germany as caviare, which is highly prized as an article of food. One sturgeon yields from ten to thirty-five pounds of eggs. On the 13th the first permanent Iron Hridge over the Rio Grande, uniting the sister republic of Mexico with the United States at Eagle pass, Tex., was finished by and for the use of 'the Mexican and National railway. The president has accepted the fifty miles recently constructed on the Northern Pacific Railroad in Montana, westward from the six hundred and twenty-fifth to tho six hundred and seventy-fifth mile. Jndian" wives are cheap in Mon tana. A Chinaman at Benton bought a Piegan squaw and her papoose for two sacks of musty flour. . . NEW TO-DAY. OCCIDENTAL HALL ! F.W.STECniTAN, - - MANAGER.
