Navigation company and the
Union Pacific for interchange of
through traffic to Portland, Ore
gon, via the Union Pacific & Ore
gon Short Line, and other matters
of interest legarding the doings of
the Northern Pacific & Oregon
Railway & Navigation companies.
Mr. Muir said that under the new
agreement the Oregon Railway &
Nai-igation company is to extend
its Baker City line to Snake river,
where Junction with the Union
Pacific & Oregon Short Line
will be made. The distance
fiom Portland to the point
of junction is 411 miles. From
Omaha to the Snake river junc
tion is about 1,700 miles. The
distance from Chicago to Portland
via the Union Pacific and Oregon
Short Line will be 2,G11 miles.
The distance from Chicago to
Portland via the Northern Pacific is
2,310 miles. All business going
to Orejron via the Union Pacific is
to iro via the Oreiron Short Line
and Snake river, and the Union
Pacific is to take no business to
Portland via San Francisco. An
agreement has also been made
witli the Union Pacific to lay a
third rail to Helena and the mouth
of the Little Blackfoot in Monta
na, and also to lay a third rail
from the mouth of the little Black
foot to Butte City, and on. this
agreement the Union Pacific will
run to Helena iia Little Black
foot and the Noithern Pacific to
Butte City via Little Blackfoot.
It has been agreed to inter
change business for Ogden, Salt
Lake Cit- and all Colorado. The
points will be precisely the same
as those from Missouri liver points.

depth heretofore found in the At
lantic has been 3,Sti3 fathoms.
The location of this sounding was
close to that of the present one,
and was made by the Challenger,
which was sent out by the royal so
ciety of England, made soundings
in the Atlantic. Tt was inside a
basin that is, manv hundred
fathoms down it was enclosed by
a ridge. The temperature of the
water at this great depth was 30
