Presidential Aspirations.
It'is arid that the movement
star tod several months ago to pro
mote Ge. Sherman's aspirations
for tfce presidency, so far from hav
ing beta abandoned, is iti active
operation. Xot onty has it the
warm support of public characters
ltko Col. Ingersoll, who are well
known friends and followers of
Mr. Bkune, but the ex-secretary
himself m various ways gives it
CMOiMinvgament. It would be an
or nor to conclude that when Col.
lugorsoM flung Gen. Sherman's fiajj
to tW Ureexe it was simply casting
a aktp on the water to test the cur
rant. It means much more than
than tJmL It was the first actual
stoj) i x pinn, deliborately de
riseti, xad jroceeding chiclLy from
the brain of Mr. Elaine. Blaine,
wWle saving that he has given up
the nice, and probably having
oonvittottd himself that he has
done so, is yet toying with
the presidency without being
a caitdklnte himself. Tliere is lit
tle reserve about his intention to
control the nomination. His
friondc profess a settled com ic

nast "While 3r. Blaine does
irtrt pretend that the chances are
net against the Republicans, he
qUericsUos the hope that with Sher
ituut the country may be carried
agmatt tbe Democrats.
To this Mr. Blaine is at present
jiving considerable attention.
Ho and Gen. Sherman are not only
ofose friends rather closer than
on a former occasion besides
being: distantly related, but be
tween tbem there exists the kind
of understanding which becomes
neoawry at the outset of an
ontorprisc of this kind. To pio
mote it the soldier oleincnt is in
the first place largely counted on.
It is caused to be understood that
Gen. Grant's favor has been en-
and "the boys," as Gon.
Sherman delights to call tin
soklter, it is believed can be
ralHed for him as they were for
Grant.
