f I '&) gi texln gvsttfrivm. ASTORIA, OREGON: TUESDAY FEBRUARY 27, 1S83 Council meots to-night. Gov. Jlood has appointed C. W. Shire ly a notary public. California butter fills the market, yet we have the bust country fur stock, with buttor at "war prices." The Albany Democrat says that young ladies who desiro a clear com plexion can obtain one by working around a fruit-drier. Salem is going to organize a board of trade, and wants a railroad through Alinto Pass. Tho same would be a help to Astoria in more ways than one. The St.Lucic, now at Philadelphia, and soon to sail for this port has on board the pipe for the Astoria Water company. About July 15th we may look for it here. A golden glory surrounds such days as the present, and among many who could onjoy it; the wish is preva lent that the road to Skipanon were ready to be traveled over. A steamer- will bo launched at Chinook to-day, built by Leharre & Pcttie Bros. She will be employed in tho fishing business by J. A. Devlin and will also make daily round trips between Astoria and llwaco. Thoso terrible scientists have dis covered that drinking cider gives one the gout. It has long since been dis covered that milk is impure and water is positively unsafe. These science men must draw the lino somewhere, pretty coon. Astoria Council of the American Legion of Honor, are making prepara tions to give a public reception at their hall on Saturday evening next, after which Professor Scott will lecture upon the working and benefits of the American Legion. The State brought up a large crowd for Astoria. Every steamer now that touches here has passengers in plenty. From San Francisco, Port land and the Sound, Astoria is the present Mecca. There will be 3,000 men on tho river this season, and nearly 3,000 Chinese in the canner ies. The bids advertised for building a new school house in district number one were opened at a meeting of the school directors yesterday. They were five in number, ranging from $13,300 to 17,000. It was deemed advisable to defer any action on the matter un til after the school meeting next Mon day evening. -Among tho many industries that are centering at Astoria that of sailmak ing is by no means inconsiderable. In connection with this, attention is di rected to the fact that A. M. Johnson & Co., who have lately moved into thoir new building on Squemoqua street are making a wide reputation by the excellent quality of their work and the prompt filling of all orders. The regular fire alarms relative to alleged conflagrations in another world were augmented last Sunday morning by a clang that indicated a fire nearer at hand. Some sparks from a tall chimney iu the rear of E. A. Quran's store had set fire to the shin gles and when the department passed by the wind was fanning the coals into a blase. It was quickly extinguished with trifling damage. Modern advertising is an art in itself, and in this line there are ar tists. To that class belongs tho Chas. A. Vogclcr company. We have a "Family Calendar for 1883-84," is sued by that company, in the interest of St. Jacob's Oil and humanity, which is elegant in conception and ten mil lion copies have been printed, and our readers can havo an opportunity of judging for themselves by enclosing a three cent stamp and their address to the company at Baltimore, Md. Improvement. A walk toward Uniontown, devel ops the fact that the line of improve- sent continues westward. A splen didly built road has been constructed from the old "jumping-off place" to the Union Pacific Co.'s cannery, and next week will sec the completion or rather extension of the roadway from its present terminus to tho Washing ton Packing Co., and past there on a curving lino to the old county road. In a abort time therefore, on a fine day one can get a horse and buggy and take a ride to Smith's Point. This last is based on the assumption that Ike vcual law of supply and demand will hold good, and some enterprising citizen will start a livery stable. Sach weather as the past three Akvs hare been would afford him pkaty custom. Old Times. There is no more faithful record than a newspaper, it being the history of the world at the date it bears. It may be the great world of thought and busy impulse, mirrored by tho myriads of daily issues flung from clanging presses and sent across the continent, or it may be a little world of itself and to itself, alone and circumscribed; yet the newspaper is none the less a faithful exponent of the time. Before us lies r. copy of The Advocate, Astoria, Saturday, July 13, 1872, Vol. I. No. 5," a four page sheet, printed on heavy bond paper, and in fair and 'goodly characters portraying the doings and happenings of eleven years ago. From it we learn "Mr. Holladay has built a summer house on Clatsop Plains," and that "new potatoes are selling in town at three cents per pound; that Dr. Dodd is putting up his residence on Che namus street," and "Mr. Van Dusen has been confined to his house for the last week with a lame foot, but is re covering rapidly." The marriage at Diamond City, Pacific county, of John Matier and Elizabeth Smith, is recorded, and announcement is made of the death of Geo. Cook. C. S. Wright advertises that he will sell lots in Shively's Astoria at miction on a certain day, and Dr. Kinsey adver tises hot and cold baths "at all hours." The 17. P. T. Co. have for sale 100 tons Carmen salt; I. W. Case patron ires the advertising columns liberally, and F. Xickerson calls upon all to come and buy stoves and tin ware cheap for cash. Further news is to the effect that a new bridge is built over the Skipanon, a quarter of a mile above Lexington; that there is to be a necktie party that evening at MaBonic Hall, and the officers elect of Beaver lodye No. 35, L O. O. F., have been duly installed. The officers at that date were G. Reed, N. G.; I. W. Case, V. G.; A. J. Megler, It. S.; L. Wilson, P. S.; L. H. Hubbard, T.; J. Hobson, W.;T. A. Hyland, O. G.; W. H. Twilight, C; F. Ferrel, I. G.; J. H. D. Gray, R. S. N. G.; C. H. Page, L. S. X. G.; A. C. Fisher, R. S. V. G.; C. H. Bain, R. S. S.; J. G. Megler, L. S. S. The little paper is a fair transcript of Astoria life eleven years ago and is worth praserving as such. The A. B. Field. Some time ago we alluded to the increasing importance of Astoria as a ship and boat building point, instanc ing the many crafts that have been launched at this place during the past few seasons. The first on the list this year is a handsome littlo vessel now being built on the beach below Kin ney's cannery and into tho hold of which tho machinery was hoisted yesterday. This steamer is seventy -fivo feet long, sixteen feet breadth of beam, and six feet depth of hold. one nas two engines uxiz with con densers, her boiler being 5x12, about 40 horse power. The vessel has been built under tho supervision of Alex. McKenzie, and reflects credit on her builders. Capt. Steve Babbage will bo tho captain, an! when completed will run her from hero to Tillamook, carrying freight and passengers. She is owned by the Tillamook Packing Co. The boat is named the A. B. Field, and is named after a gentleman now residing in San Francisco who is described by those who know him as a man who knew no discouragement, and never turned back for difficulty. The vessel will be launched in about two weeks, and will immediately go to work as a regular packet. Wanted. Girl to do general housework. Wages S30 per month. Enquire at this office. Notice. Some one havinc made it their busi ness to circulate the report that we have raised the price of boat sails, we hereby state that it is a falsehood got up to injure our business. Prices are the same as last year, and besides we give 5 per cent, off for cash payment. A. M. Johnson & Co., Sail makers, Astoria, Oregon. Oysters! 0.vsters!! R. & It. dock yesterday a3 the State came in and saw the crowd getting off for As toria, and later in the day another crowd principally biuo-bloused China men get off on the afternoon boat, the thought came into our mind, "there is immigration of :i certain class.' The necessity for increased popula tion is one of tho favorite themes of men who are supposed to have at heart the good of the nation. Hum bers seem to be the desideratum, and the appareut ending to a good many arguments ib that the more people the more happiness. If this bo so, then China and India ought to be the happiest and most prosperous coun tries in tho world. That they are not seems evidence that the theory is wrong, somehow. We are in favor of immigration of a certain sort. Were Astoria larger wo believo a good many of us would be more prosperous. Our merchants would sell more goods, and our hotel men would build on additional stories, our boys who are growing up would havo something moro satisfactory of fered them in the way of nmusemonts than the dives and dens that offer their present faded attractions, our schools and public places would re ceive direct benefit, and in a number of ways thero would be an improve ment if the increase in population wero of a desirablo nature. Other wipe, otherwise. To derive benefit from increased population requires something moro than aggregation of human units, something better than thy mere occu pancy of bodies. Quality is para mount to quantity. There's two sides to this question. Ono is the side the Fourth-of-July orator takes "as ho points to tho stars and stripes, and talks about our glorious institutions, and the fatherhood of God and broth erhood, of man, etc The other side is taken by thoso who sometimes won der "what good is it?'' tkctii is Micirry. When Dr. Pierce, of Buffalo, X. Y., announced that his "Favorite Pre scription" would positively cure the many diseases and weaknesses pecu liar to women, some doubted and con tinued to employ the harsh and caus tic local treatment. But tho might' truth gradually became acknowledged. Thousands of ladies employed the "Favorite Prescription" and were speedily cured. By druggists. FJSKSOXAIi.
