m . . .. glxc BnilT Vstariau. ASTnKI OP.EGON FRIDAY JANUARY 19, 13 The Beef Boom. A Nevada otitic man has been i tellinr the Chronicle that thou sands of cattle periHifd in Nevada -and Onrun lat winter and that j the weather prosperts at present' give ground lor fears of equal loss i this year. The Post does not like to dispute the word of its conteni- porary's infermant: but is quite! sure that his statement of the loss of cattle last voar is an cxajjgera- tion, and that there is no ground for a fear that this season in Ne vada and southern Oregon will be an exceptional disastrous one for cattle. The losses in the sections named have of late 3'cars been re duced to a minimum, by the stock men storing hay and feeding it when other feed fails. The cattle kings just about this time have a weakness for declaring that there are no cattle in the country and that what cattle then may be are sure to die before spring. This means a still higher price for beef. The first shoe ever pegged hy a machine has come into the pos session of the Esex Institute, of Salem, Mass. It is accompanied by a letter fiom the late Samuel Preston, the inventor and patentee of the machine, detailing its history- and the story of its manu facture, and also the original let ters patent. The letter is inscribed on parchment, and has the signa ture of Andrew Jackson, presi- i dent; Edward Livingston, seerc-i tary of state, and Roger B. Taney, attorney-general, and beans date March,lS33. IHAUt. PORT OP ASTORIA. r.KADY FOi: KA. Pnlda.
