THE STRUCTURE OP THP CAS
CADE MOUNTAINS.
Tho alleged slipping of the
basaltic mountains toward tho
Columbia river, at tho point where
tho river cuts through the Cascado
range, has been attributed to the
slope of the underlying sandstone.
It is more probable that the slip
is upon one or both of the pasty
conglomerate beds above and be
low the sandrock. The structure
of the mountain has been studied
by Professor J. LeConte, whose
description ib quoted below in the
lately published report of Lieu
tenant Symons' examination of
the upper Columbia river.
There is fennd: 1. Along the
water's edge, and for about fifteen
fet upward, a very coarse con
glomerate of rounded pophyn tic
pebbles and boulders of all sizes,
up to six feet in diameter, coher
ing by an imperfectly lithified
earthy paste.
2. Above this conglomerate is a
very distinct, irregnlar old ground
surface bed, in which are found
slicified stumps, with their roots
sproading out over twenty feet in
diameter, penetrating into the
bowlder material beneath, and
evidently in situ. This is un-.
doubtedly an old forest ground
surface.
3. Resting directly in this
ground surface and therefore in
closing the erect stumps, is a layer
of stratified sandstone, two or
three feet thick, filled with beauti
ful impressions of leaves of several
kinds of forest trees, about whose
slicified bases they are found.
This layer is not continuous, like
the ground surface on which it
rests.
4. Above this stratified leaf
bearing layer rests a coarse con
glomerate similar to that beneath
at the water level. Scattered
about in the lower part of the
upper conglomerate and in the
stratified sandstone, and sometimes
lying in tbe dirt beneath it, are
fragments of trunks and branches
of oaks and conifers, in a silicified
or lignitized condition. They are
evidently .silicified driftwood.
5. Above this conglomerate, and
resting upon it, rise the layers of
lava, mostly columnar basalt, one
above another, to the hight of
more than 3000 feet.
The history of these formations

eows: 1. The region of the Columbia
river was a forest, probably a val
ley overgrown by conifers and
oaks. The subsoil of this forest
was a coarse boluder drift pro
duced by erosion from older
rocks.
2. By excess of water, either by
floods or changes of level, the
trees were killed, and their leaves
shed and buried in the mud, and
their trunks rotted to stumps
3. Tumultuous and rapid de
posit of coarse drift containing
driftwood covered up the forest.

stumps, one hundred, perhaps
several hundred, feet in thick
ness. 4. The surface thus formed
-was eroded into hills and dales.
5. Then followed the outburst
of lava in successive flows, per
haps for a long period of time,
and the silicification of the wood
and the cementation of the drift
by the percolation of hot alkaline
waters containing silica, as
happens so commonly in sub-lava
drifts.
6. Finally followed the process
of erosion by which the present
stream channels, whether main or
tributary, have been cut to their
enormous depth.
The outflow of lava whith forms
the bulk of tho mountain was
. probably the grandest and most
extraordinary lava flow that ever
took place It covered an area of
200,000 square miles to an average
depth of something like 2000 feet.
Its greatest depth was not less
than 3,700 feet.

was observed by a Mule to be in
Distress. "Tell me," said the
Mule "what is the Cause of your

with you." "Alas," said the man,
"I am Dead Broke and I know
not how to Mend mj' For
tunes." If you will just Step in
side of this Yard," remarked the
Mule, in a Kindly tone. "I will
Try to make a Raise for You." The
man Did so; and the Fact that his
Hat was found in an Adjoining
State the next Day, warrants the
Belief that tho Mule fulfilled his
Pledge.
A Sympathetic Pawnbroker
once Called upon an Afflicted
Clothing Merchant to Condole
with him upon the Loss of his

A Hint From Japan.
A notable instance of the Japan
ese understanding of the condi
tions under which they exist, oc
curs in the manner of giving secur
ity to pagodas. Pagodas are of
great height, yet many have ex
isted for 700 years, and have with
stood successfully the many vibra
tions of the ground, which must
have inevitably achieved their
overthrow had they been erected
of stone or brick. When I first
ascended a pagoda I was struck
with the amount of timber era
ployed in its construction; and j
could not help feeling that the
material here wasted was even ab
surdly excessive. But what of
fended my feelings most was the
presence of an enormous log of
wood in the centre of the struct
ure," which ascended from its base
to its apex. At the top this mass
o timber was nearly two feet in
diameter, and lower down a log
equally large was bolted to each i
of the four sides of this central
mass. I was so surprised with this
l waste ot timber that I called tho
attention of my good friend Sakata
to the matter, and especially de
nounced the use of. the center
block. To my astonishment he
told me that the structure must be
strong to support the vast central
mass. In my ignorance I replied
that the center part was not sup
ported by the sides, but upon .
reaching the top I found this (
monstrous central mass suspended, ,
like the clapper of a bell; and'
when I had descended I could, by
lying on the ground, see that there
was an inch of space intervening
between it and the earth which j
formed the floor of the pagoda.'
The pagoda is to a Budohist tem- ;
pie what a spire is to a Christian j
church; and by its clever construe- '
tion it is enabled to retain its'
verticle position even during the '
continuance of earthquake shocks,
for by the swinging of this vast j
pendulum the center of gravity is
kept within the base. I now un
derstand the reason for that lavish
use of timber which I had so rash
ly pronounced to be useless; and
I see that there is a method in
Japanese construction which is
worthy of high appreciation. In
the absence of any other instance,
the employment of this scientific
method of keeping the pagoda
upright shows how carefully the
Japanese have thought out the re
quirements to be met. Dresser's
