The pamphlet entitled "The War of 1S86, betvren the United States and Great Britain," lately issued in London, is exciting much atten tion. 1 he interest which it has excited is not by any means con fined to army . and navy officers, but is generally shared by "public men. It is regarded as the clear est presentation of pur inadequate border and seacoast defenses yet made y any of our writers or speakers. The fact that it pur ports to be only :i fancy sketch appeare to be lost sight of by those persons who discuss it, so entire tirely plausible and possible do all of its proportions appear. To most it seems a startling presents tion ot tne subject, ana it seems certain to attain its evident object namely, to direct attention to the weak snots of our svstem of national defense, or rather to the utter lack of elicctivc coast or border defense. It is exceedingly significant that the story of sup posed events is not regarded as extravagant, either with respect to possible future attacks upon our lake cities or those of the seaboard. "Washington Special. The price of stamped envelopes, letter size, has been reduced to S1.S0 per 1,000, with the postage added, which is a reduction of 10 per cent, liejurn request notices will be printed on the lopes without additional enve charjrc when ordered in quantities .of GOO or. more. W.SEIIL1N. llC NEW YORK. 1883- More people have read Tiik Sux during the year just now passing than eer before since it was lirst printed. Xo other news paper published on this side of tlie earth has been bought and read in anv year by so many men and women. We arc credibly informed that people buy, read, and like The Sitx for the following reasons, among others : liecause its news columns present in at tract!, e form and with the greatest possible accuracy what ever lias interest for human kind ; the events, the deeds, and misdeeds, tlie wisdom, the philosophy, the notable fol ly, the solid sen.-e, the improving nonsense all the news of the busiest world at present revolving in .space. Rccausc people have learned that in its re marks concerning persons and atlairs Tiik Sirx makes a practice of telling them the exact truth to the best of its ability three hundred and sixty-live clays In the year, be fore election as well as after, about the whales as well as about the small fish, In the face of dissent as plainly and fearlcsslv as when supported by general approval. Tiik Sex has absolutely no purposes to sere, sacthei!ifcniintuinof':s readers and the furtherance of the common good. liecause it is everybody's newspaper. "No man is so humble that The srols indiffer ent to his welfare and his rights. Xo man Is so rich that it can allow injustice to be done him. No man. no association of men, is powerful enough to be exempt fron the strict application of its principles of right laud wrong. liecause in polities it has fought for a doz en years, without intermission and some times a'oa. st alone among newspapers, the light tlut nas resulted in tlie recent over whelming popular verdict against Robeson ism and lor honest government. "N'o matter what party is in power, Tiik Slx stands and will continue to .stand like a rock for the in terests of the people against the ambition of bosses, the encroachments of monopolists, and the dishonest schemes of public robbers. All this is what we are told almost daily by our friends. One man holds that Tun So. is the best religious newspaper ever published, because its Christianity is undi luted with cant. Another holds that it is the best Republican newspaper printed, be cause it has already whipped half the rascals out of that party, aud is proceeding against the other half with undiminished vigor. A third helices it to be the best magazine of general literature in existence, because its readers miss notmng worthy oi notice that current in the world of thought. So everv riend of Tiik Sux discovers one of its inanj -.ides that appoals with particular force to .dMndiidual liking. It jou already know Tun Strx, von will observe that in 1S5 it Is a little better than ever before. If you do not already know Tiik Sux, you will find it to be a mir ror of all human activity, a storehouse of the choicest products of common sense and im agination, a mainstay for the cause of hon est government, a sentinel for genuine .leff crsonian Democracy, a. scourge for wicked ness of.every species, and an uncommonly gded investment for the coining j ear.
