The Sail Lake 'Tribune says, 'that it conceives it light, that it be pointed out to the people, that a railroad ample for all present purposes, could be thoroughly equipped between Omaha and San Francisco, for less money than these corporations have collected from the people in fares and freights in" a single, 'year.' Let us look at this for a moment. Suppose the Virion and Central Pacific railroads aie Aorlh ."0 000,000, which is more than their value, as estimated above, and suppose these corporations were regulated by congress with jusl laws, and allowed to make $ per cent, per annum on their invest ment of StfOjOOO.OOrt. One-fifth of S per cent, on r0, 000,000, would be 800.000. This last is what we should pay to these "corporations as a just compensa tion for their services. So we do pay annually ?3,373,1."0 more than is just, and this vast sum is ex torted from us and we are annu ally robbed of this amount.
