S20,8C5,7r0. The Sail Lake
'Tribune says, 'that it conceives it
light, that it be pointed out to the
people, that a railroad ample for
all present purposes, could be
thoroughly equipped between
Omaha and San Francisco, for less
money than these corporations
have collected from the people in
fares and freights in" a single,
'year.'
Let us look at this for a moment.
Suppose the Virion and Central
Pacific railroads aie Aorlh ."0
000,000, which is more than their
value, as estimated above, and
suppose these corporations were
regulated by congress with jusl
laws, and allowed to make $ per
cent, per annum on their invest
ment of StfOjOOO.OOrt. Such a
profit would keep their stock at
par in "Wall street and nil the
great markets of the world, for

a per cent, would yield the stock
holders 4,000,000 a year instead
of S20J8G7,7.")0, which thev now
receive.
This statement shows that thef-e
corporations are now receiving for
their portions annually $(5,SGr,
770 moie than is just compensa
tion for the service they render
the public.
Let us go a little fin titer; ac
cording to the estimates of intel
iigent' men of the north Pacific
coast, that is to say Oregon and
"Washington, we pay about one
fifth of the vast sum, which is for
us of the noithwest, $l,17o,l.i0.
One-fifth of S per cent, on r0,
000,000, would be 800.000. This
last is what we should pay to these
"corporations as a just compensa
tion for their services. So we do
pay annually ?3,373,1."0 more than
is just, and this vast sum is ex
torted from us and we are annu
ally robbed of this amount. This
robbery congress can pi event, and
there is no reason why it has not
already done so, but culpable neg
lect of duty. Congiess has the
same power to icgulate. this busi
ness and secute the lights of the
people, as our count v eouiis Inve
