On the 2d inst. the JJritish steam ship Triumph, having previously con veyed a cargo of Celestials from. Hong kong to San Francisco, arrived at As- itona. On the following day she steamed away for Nanaitno and thence she proceeded to Port Townsend, hav ing on board fifteen Chinamen who had been brought across the Pacific as cooks. As she n cared the latter port the captain appreciated the fact that he could not land the Mongolians in American territory without rendering hunscif and his vessel liable to the new law. He was too late and his Chinamen were shut out by just three days. But at all hazards he had got to get rid of them and consequently he transferred them to the tug Goliah which brought them over here yester day and landed them 0:1 British soil. The New Prison Shops. A gang of convicts ate at woik upon the foundation of the new shops within the prison enclosure, .sa$ the Statesman, and the building will be rapidl pushed to completion. The building is to be a substantia! one and so arranged that it will be a difficult matter to set it on fire. Mr. NY. K Knot lib, the architect of the insane asylum, has the erection of the shop in charge. It will be one stor' in height, In feet in the clear, 20 feet S inches in lenpth, and 4G feet 8 inches in width. It will be divided into three couipai tincnts and will be so arranged that they will be suitable for'airy kind of manufacturing. Libel Suit. .James Turk has commenced uitin the state circuit court against the rcgon- ian Publishing compaii', to recover $25,000 damages for the publication of an alleired libel. The item which j has done Turk the damage claimed was published on July 23, 1832, headed '"Turk's Nefarious Trade," and was in reference to shaughaing sailors, and as Turk claims has given his house, hotel and business- a bad name, in consequence of which ho is damaged in the amount above men tioned.
