The following; extract appeared in The Astoiuax yesterday from a Coos Bay News letter: Your contributor of the 8th inst., is correct, with regard to the building of the schooner Gen. Lane- by McClellan in '1S59, but not correct in supposing that she was the first vessel built in Ore gon. A schooner was built, as near as I can remember, in 1845, called the Star of Oregon; she was taken to San Francisco and sold. In 1S30, n ships long-boat was sawed in two, lengthened and was transformed into a steamer for the purpose of navigating the Clackamas rapids below Oregon city; her name was the 1 lousier. Xo doubt, she was the first strain vessel on the "VTillamct. Mr. John Hobson one of the early pioneers of Oregon, calls our attention to the fact that prior to 1S50 three vessels were built in Clatson count v. In 1SJG-7-S the schooner Wave, built by Fred Ketchum at Hunts mill above upper Astoria, was plying legu larly on the bay and up and down the Columbia river. In 1848-9, after the gold fever broke out, the Wave was fitted out and sailed for California carrying about forty passengers. In 1S4S Mr. Robert McEwan built the schooner Pio neer at Skipanon, and she satied for California. Among the pas sengers were Messrs. Thos. Owens, Trask, and others. Mr McEwan went as master of her. In lSoO Thos.. Goodwin and Mr. Frost built the steamer Columbia at upper Astoria well known to a great many people of the present da'. The reference to the long boat lengthened out, probably comes from the fact that early in 184S a part of the crew of the whale ship Maine wreoked 'near Astoria, took one of the ships boats and cut her in two, spliced and fitted her for sea, and sailed for California. These are matters of conse quence bearing upon that branch of the subject o( history izi Ore gon. Prior to tho date of the organization of the territory, and the establishing of the Custom-house at Astoria, August 14 th 1848, a large amount of shipping had been car ried on here, dating back to the Aotive iu J 824, the first vessel of that year to arrive. Jn 182.1 three vessels came; the Alexander, Lively and Chadboro. The latter was for some time employed as a packet between foits Victoria and Xisqually. In 1820 the Wil liam and Ann ai rived. In 1827 the Eagle, the IVyad, the Owyhee and the Convoy arrived, and fol lowing that year, up to the arrival of the Harpooner in 1S4S, we have accounts of thirty - five vessels calling at Astoria. The fate ofi some of these vessels is unknown. The William and Ann was cast away just inside the bar, under circumstances that led Dr. Mc Laughlin to believe that the Indi ans had a hand in it; not a soul on board was saved; and he made war upon the tribe, killing several, an account of which is published in Mrs. Victors River of the West, page 29. The Convoy was iimi larlv lost in tho Willainet river below the Clackamas. When the Owyhee and Convey arrived at Fort Astoria (Astoria), thuy were met by the sloop Multnomah from Vancouver, with a cam-o of Hudson bay goods, at oppo sition prices, as they were ''Boston vessels." The "Bostons" were considered interiopeis. The May Dacre, a Boston brig, arrived in 1834 with mission supplies and goods for Capt. Nat." J. Wyeth, who established the first salmon packing house on the river, on Sauvies island, and started the brig back to America with about half a cargo of fish, but she was never heard from. The schooner Shark arrived here in 1S4G, July 19th. On the 10th of September she was wrecked going out. The Captain and crew were all saved, and in January, 1847, sailed for California in the Hudson bay com panys schooner Chadboro. When Abraham Lincoln was assassinated, Queen Victoria wrote a four-page letter to Mrs. Lincoln. It was the unrestrained outporino of the sympathy from a full heart. It has never been published, as the Lincoln family regarded it a violation of propriety to do so. Hartinaim tho nihiKst, is on his vray to America from London. The Philadelphia Record pub lishes an account of a railway ride of 172 miles at the rate of one and a half miles a minute. Tho last vote at Albany in the New Yortc senatorial contest, on Tuesday, was about the same as the first one a month since. The Sitka steamer California ar rived at port Townsend on Tues day. On the up passage from Astoria she arrived at Sitka on the 10th. Reports from the mines are encouraging. Texas is increasing hernotoriety as a lawless state. The daily re ports of atrocious murders in that section will soon cause the state to be recognized as a veritable dark and bloody ground. A Nashville, Tennessee, dispatch of Tuesday says: "An authentic account is received of the birth in Jackson enmity in that state of seven children at one birth. They were delivered at a distance of from ten minutes to five hours. All were girls weighing from four to five pounds each and all healthy and well developed. The physi cian -was greatly excited, and the people for miles around flocked to see the woman and her babies. The husband is small and thin; the wife strong and healthy. It is true that M. Rimen, gov ernor of the national bank of Greece, who has been negotiating with the government in the name of M. de Lesseps, with the view of constructing a ship canal through the isthmus of Corinth, to connect the waters of the gulf of Corinth with those of the -Egan sea, has secured a decree granting the necessary concession to Lesseps. The distance across the isthmus at its narrowest part is only four miles, so that there is nothing very diffi cult about the project compared with the excavations that will be required on the isthmus of Darien. De Lesseps expects to break ground at Corinth, in 1882. Probably no more striking evi dence is furnished of changed opinion it the south than that of Fred Douglass, a former slave, not only being permitted, but invited, to deliver the address on memorial day, at Harpers ferry. lie spoke from the very platform in front of a blacksmith shop which old John Urown had occupied some twenty vears before him. His remark wet e eulogistic of the anti-slavery luro, and his speech throughout is said to have been the most elo- quent of his life. A notable episode of the occasion was the congratulations he received from the Virginia state attorney who conducted tiie prosecution against John Brown. The scene is de scribed as having been very im pressive. Commander GorriRge of the United States navy does not be lieve in divided responsibility. He was recently tendered the oflice of commissioner to superin tend the cleaning of the streets of New York. He promptly de clined the honor, giving as his reason that the power necessary to clean the streets was vested in five different departments, the one having the most work to do having the least to say. The Comman der is evidently familiar with the fact that too many cooks spoil the broth. It is pretty nearly certain that the new street cleaning law passed by the New York legisla ture will not work much better than the existing one. The city can only expect relief when she cuts loose from the legislature and manages her own municipal af fairs. NEW TO-DAY. 71 tVanted.
