THE LECTURE BUSINESS The Pleasuies of a Lecturing Tour as Portrayed by Bob Burdette. ciitlic-Dt-moerat. When the train rolled :ivay from Kenton the jester announced Ins calm determination to run away from all his engagements. I am tired to death, he said; I have talked six nights a week erer since the ninth of January; 1 have sat up until one and two o'clock a. u. entertaining people after the lecture, and then been called for six o'clock trains; 1 haw visited ?2 coal mines, inspected .VJ coke ovens, gone through 07 iron works, visited 94 schools, admired 118 handsome churches, gorged myself at 120 banquets, walked through 173 wagon shops and 0 pump factories; walked up and down the lonff streets of 19S terms and ad mired everything. I saw; have climbed SO endless hills to gaze at S6 endless views that "Bayard Tavlor said when he was here was far superior to anything he saw in Europe;'' 1 have taken my nose in my hand and lounged through 2 jrlove factories, 5 tanneries and o fertilizer works; three weeks ago I lectured Saturday night. at up and talked with friends until 2 a. m., got up to a seven o'clock breakfast, went to church with friends at 10:30 a. m., lunched with some other friends at 12, went to Sabbath school at 2, Kit in the Bible class and made a nice little speech to the children, dined with some other friends at o; at tended evening service at :30, went to a friends house after ser vice, and when we broke up at 11:30, because I had to take :i train at 4:15 a. v., a irood old brother --hook my hand warmly and said: "Well, well, we's all glad to huve met you; and you 've had a good long rest here with us, and you '11 feel fresh for vour weeks work." If 1 felt as fresh as his remark, J would be even as a June cucum ber. 1 have umpired al two base ball matches, rode at a hor&e race, have written two commencement essays for high-school girls, held the cat in my lap (and T love the devil a little better than 1 do a cat), heard the children say their pray ers and taken a hand at draw poker to please the boys. don't complain,'' the jester suid, tucking his cap and bells away in his valise. "1 don't complain a bit. All the people 1 have met are lovely and lovable people, and they did their best to make me have a good time, but seven good limes a week for six months is too much for one man to stand; 1 am all broke up; T am clean gone, and the setting sun to-night shall see me flying away from the rostrum -ed field, headed for Philadelphia.'' And headed .that way he was, and fly in that direction he did, follow ed in his homeward flight by a long cloud of wrathful impreca tions from disappointed audiences and impotent protests of indig nant committees and long and im portunate bills on expenses from the same, and earnest, but unheed ed expostulations from the bureau. "Let 'em howl," the Jeser chuck led, as he tucked his head under the Pullman blanket. "Let 'cm howl; I will sleep with sealed lips from here to Philadelphia, and if any mau wakes mc up at 3 o'clock in the morning and asks mc to tell him a funny story, I'll tear out his quivering heart and feed it to the monkeys .it the Zoo. That 's the kind of a. funny man I am." And the train rolled on. The Modem Greeks. It would be hard to immi any otlx?r Kop!e, undeniably kver and possessed of considerable educational appliances, that can boast neither of authors, painters, sculptors, nor composvrs. There are no native theatres; native literature is confined to journalism; and the fine arts are o utterly neglected that even the jangling of a pianoforte is an unusual sound. Hence, if the creative power of a nation real by bear. a constant ratio to its general vigor, we cannot estimate very highly the vitality of the Hellenes. A powerful consideration strength ens this conclusion the hepeless: backwardness of agriculture and of the rural population. M. About calculated that Continental Greece contains 3,000,000 acres of mountain and pasture, similar extent of arabh land, and about , 250,000 acres of forest. Of (he 5,000,000 acres of arable laud less than 200,000 were actually under cultivation that is, something under four percent. The proportion mav have been somewhat increas ed in the last twenty yem, but still remains appallingly small. Even on tin- wide Argive and Bteotian plains which Ikxisis some thing resembling road;, cultiva tion appears in insignificant patches: on the table-lands of Arcadia it is even sparcer, while in the beautiful mountain hollows, on strips of soil that, in tin semi limestone formations of the Derbyshire or Craven hills, would be rented at X'3 per acre, it is al- j most non existent. The traveller is appalled by the surrounding desola tion; and yet there is scarcely a product ol the temperate .ones that will not flourish. Tobacco and cotton grow well in the plain; rice could be introduced with suc cess; and the mulberry, with due management, would provide for the rearing of an indefinite quan tity of silk-worms. Figs, almonds, aprieols, oranges and lemons are unsurpassed. The olive grows everywhere ell nigh untended FACTS AND SCRAPS- A Fair Proposition. Since a calf only one hour old has been sold in Xew Jersey for $2,500, the cow creation may be said to be looking up. We do not advise any fellow to be born in June if he can help it. Fellows born in June never make any money. Such at least has been experience. . European tours will soon be come unfashionable. The horrible discovery has been made that it is cheaper to summer in Europe than at an American watering place. The 25,000 Americans who will visit Europe this summer will sjHMid more money abroad in three months than the 200,000 immi grunts to this country will spend in ten years. Seriously weunded: .MissLilli white. w1k is about to marry, re marked on Memorial Day that she could sympathize with the bo-s in blue, having lost her hand in an engagement. Some philanthropist has said that a man who truly loves a horse cannot be wicked. lie mui-t be in the wrong; for Texas jails are full of men who love other peoples horses, no wisely, but too well. "They do not die on the premi ses," is the recommendation given for a patent rat poison. Tt makes the nits feel so bad that thev cro away and die at the house of a neighbor. There is nothing like it. The summer resorts, it is said, are generally paying particular at tention to drainage. Jones, who knows what he is talking about, say the always did pay particu lar attention to drainage. They drained his wallet pretty effectual ly wherever he has been. "I'll teach you how to lie, and steal, and smoke, and use profane language," said an irate Galveston parent to his oldest offspring, at the same time winging a good sized supling. In rocky districts all cereals thrive, already' Li Hung Chang, the Chinese viceroy, has very sensible ideas on national policy. His latest utter ance is a letter on the Corean question, in which he advises treaty relations with England and the United States as the best means of guarding against the designs of Japan and Russia. "When one re members the foreign policy of China a generation ago, it seems well nigh marvelous to hear a statesman of that country advising a course which his own nation re sisted so desperately. Such arc the capabilities of a land that ignorance and indo lence hac turned into a wilder ness. Tin vintage is so clumsily trodden and fermented overy vyhere, except in tin islands and near the seaports, that wine which ouirht to command the markets of Eurppe, not only is unable to bear exportation, but would spoil be fore the end of the year unless mixed with resin, a practice highly nauseous to the uneducated palate. In fact, dislike ol field labor amounts to a mania, and except at harvest time no male is ever to be seen at werk: like other noble savages, he bits at home at ease while his helpmate scratches the soil and bows her head beneath her weight of burdens. The result upon the interior econonvy of the dwellings is such as may xrell be imagined. Even in a priests or farmers house furniture rarely ex tends beyond a rude table and two or three wooden stools; whole vil lages are without a fire-place; the process of sweeping or cleaning is unknown, and the entire family sleeps curled up in rags upon the floor in company with the insects of the establishment. Just what should induce a boy to leave two beer bottles under a board near the top of a llight of stairs was the conundrum Mr. Brauuan proceeded to investigate after fmdinir, on cominr down stairs with a hod of ashes, that his son had done so, and that the thing was not firm to step on, in consequence of which he had been slung a triple somersault down the stairs and had wrenched all his joints, nearby broken his neck, bruised himself in eighteen places, raked the skin off in nine, and got his mouth, ears, hair and eyes full of ashes beside getting a lot down the back of his neck and scattering the rest on the floor, so it took the house-maid two hours to clean them up.
