Mr. John Hobson made a -visit to Williamsport yesterday on horseback. The Merom will complete her cargo for Europe at Capt. Flavcla dock. The river was full of fishing nots on Sunday. Tho law is but little re garded. Mr. Sloop, who last year taught the Knappa school, is now teaching at upper Astoria. The Tarn O'Shautor ai rived at Knappton yesterda3T, Ocklahama tow ing, Fcrchen pilot. The Merom arrived down from Portland last evening in tow of the Chief, Johnson pilot- Rescue Engine company No. U celebrated the fourth anniversary of their organization on the 19th. Tho Clan Grant has completed her cargo of salmon for Liverpool and hauled off into the stream. When the Bellaporte comes down to complete her cargo she will prob ably lay at Hustlers old dock. The tug Astoria goes to the rock to-day with another cargo of brick, and other building materials. Lieut. Price has completed his anrveys on the bar, and will proceed to headquarters in Portland to-day. The body of Mr. Benson was found yesterday near Scarboro point, by Capt. Frank Stevens, of the sloop Dolphin. The road over the point above the old dredger, below the Eagle can nery, has slid into the river and washed away. Cement boulders by the scow Jo.id could be gathered on upper town beach now, exposed from frequent slides of the mountain. Dr. J. Welch, dentist, is com pelled to leave Astoria to-day in con sequence of engagements in Portland, but will return here at an early day. Mrs. B. S. Worsley has returned from a very pleasant visit to the picturesque country home of her father, Capfc. Harlow, in Multnomah county. Weatherbee and Thomes have got about as neat and quiet a place as any on the river. We paid them a brief visit yesterday, and there was not a word spoken among the Chi nese operatives during our stay. The work goes along with the regularity of clock work. Miss Belle Welch received a dis patch yesterday from The Dalles, an nouncing the death of Albina, the second child of her brother John W., in that city on Sunday. The little one died of scarlet fever. Mrs. "Welch has been in The Dalles for about three weeks during their sickness. A fishing party on Youngs river da' before yesterday had lots of fun, and caught baskets fnl of trout. One less fortunate than the rest, "i getting around a deop hole fell into it. For a while Ins companion insisted he was a flounder, but when he got out found that he was a good aized Berry. The reason why Astoria Engine company No. l's flag was flying at half mast on Sunday was because the boys, when hoisting their flag in respect to Rescue No. 2's anniversary, tangled the halyards which broke, and the flag could be neither lowered nor raised. Richard Welcome climbed the pole yesterday ?md fixed things. i , i- .rmjauui-w'JulfJAJPWBa Common Council Proceedings. . Council met pursuant to ad-1 journment, Mayor D. L. Thev nulled their canoes up to the old camp grounds be tween Main and Cass streets, but the place was so changed from that of old timos, that the Poor Indian could scareclv realise the situation. Hoyt, Purser Dil lingham, and Eiig'neor McDermot started for Crows Rest, back of Brookfield. On arriving at the top they planted a while flag there. Mr. J. G. Mcglor furnished them with a guide. This is the parly with whom Mr. L. Samuels started to make the ascent. It seems useless for the light house board to issue notice to mari ners That after September 1st the bell sounded at cape Disappointment light station, mouth of Columbia river, Ore gon,w ill be discontinued.
