China and Japan.
From Japan and China papers
of the latent dates, received
on Friday by the Columbia we
glean the follewing: uIl is not
long since that China was on the
brink of a collision with her
powerful llussiau neighbor, and
prepared herself as much as possi
ble for such a contingency. That
difficult- having been mutually
arranged, the government of the
Celestial empire have turned their
attention to tlie matters which
have been in abeyance for a long
time between China and Japan.
Being comparatively better pre
pared for war than her neighbor.
China has considered the present
a fit opportunity to rake up the
difference in connection with the
Loochoo group, and to avenge the
Formosan insult.
Li Hung Chung and Lin K'uu-vi
were deputed to inquire into the
circumstances which have given
rise to the dispute. Such an able
statesman as Li Hung Chung
doubtless soon discovered, if he
had not known before, that his
government had not the remotest
ground for basing a claim to the
Loochoos. But he is suflicienlly
sagacious to know that such an
opinion from him would not have
much weight with the war party;
hence he took a middle course,
and proposed that the group
should be divided into two. one
half to belong to Japan and the
other to China. China is taking a
decided stand for what she con
siders her lights. A very little
more strain will snap the peaceful
link asunder, and the arbitrament
of the sword will then be resorted
to to settle the differences.
The prevailing opinion among
foreigners is that the Chinese
have a bad cause. In China
the death of the eastern
Empress has given hopes of the
anti-foreigtt party to accede to
power. The life of the western
Empress is considered to hang
only by a thread, and should the
predictions of her eaily demise be
unfortunately realized, there will

On arriving nt Arcueil one is
prepared to lind some- unusual in
dustry carried on; the large tracts
of undulating ground, uneultivated
and unfenced; covered with a
scant growth of grass and weeds,
dotted here and there with pecul
iar wooden air-shaft looking like
dismantled windmills, make up a
picture of dosolalcness and neglect
that is unique in tin neighborhood
of Paris. One1 first impression
on flighting at the station is that
the place is ownerless. Scramb
ling along the muddy track that
did service for a pathway from the
station. 1 struck the road on which
was the liouse of the rhampignon
ist to whom 1 had been directed.
Behind the neatly-kept house and
rarden was a vard, with some
heaps of lxt manure being turned
by several men. one of whom was
the proprietor. On reading

few miles from Hilo, to the east
ward of the town and still within

south of Hilo, and must do con
siderable damage to the Waiakea
plantation, if it docs not entirely
destroy it. There is a great deal
of drunkenness reported at Kain
alu, Molokai. An intoxicating
aguardicnt, or okolehao, is distilled
from sweet jwtato mash fermented.
Large gatherings of native people
are said to come from neighboring
districts and to collect at this
place, and have a jorum and a
jubilee about three times a week.
A number of natives at Kapaa
have held meetings in order to
form a co-operative association for
the purchase of land and other
purposes. There were thirty-six

The present Emperor, Kwang-su,
quite a child, ahvas feeble in

pected of him. The emperor of
China is ill of either the raeasels or
small pox. Four of the most pow
erful statesmen and warriors of
the state are at the capital at this
juncture, and what course events
may take is a grave matter of
conjecture. The- obsequies of the
late western Empress are being
rapidly carried forward, and the
funeral will take place tills year.
