Mr. John Hobson made a -visit to

The Merom will complete her
cargo for Europe at Capt. Flavcla
dock.
The river was full of fishing nots
on Sunday. Tho law is but little re
garded. Mr. Sloop, who last year taught
the Knappa school, is now teaching at
upper Astoria.
The Tarn O'Shautor ai rived at
Knappton yesterda3T, Ocklahama tow
ing, Fcrchen pilot.
The Merom arrived down from
Portland last evening in tow of the
Chief, Johnson pilot-
Rescue Engine company No. U
celebrated the fourth anniversary of
their organization on the 19th.
Tho Clan Grant has completed
her cargo of salmon for Liverpool and
hauled off into the stream.
When the Bellaporte comes down
to complete her cargo she will prob
ably lay at Hustlers old dock.
The tug Astoria goes to the rock
to-day with another cargo of brick,
and other building materials.
Lieut. Price has completed his
anrveys on the bar, and will proceed
to headquarters in Portland to-day.
The body of Mr. Benson was
found yesterday near Scarboro point,
by Capt. Frank Stevens, of the sloop
Dolphin.
The road over the point above
the old dredger, below the Eagle can
nery, has slid into the river and
washed away.
Cement boulders by the scow Jo.id
could be gathered on upper town
beach now, exposed from frequent
slides of the mountain.
Dr. J. Welch, dentist, is com
pelled to leave Astoria to-day in con
sequence of engagements in Portland,
but will return here at an early day.
Mrs. B. S. Worsley has returned
from a very pleasant visit to the
picturesque country home of her
father, Capfc. Harlow, in Multnomah
county.
Weatherbee and Thomes have
got about as neat and quiet a place as
any on the river. We paid them a
brief visit yesterday, and there was
not a word spoken among the Chi
nese operatives during our stay. The
work goes along with the regularity of
clock work.
Miss Belle Welch received a dis
patch yesterday from The Dalles, an
nouncing the death of Albina, the
second child of her brother John W.,
in that city on Sunday. The little
one died of scarlet fever. Mrs. "Welch
has been in The Dalles for about three
weeks during their sickness.
A fishing party on Youngs river
da' before yesterday had lots of fun,
and caught baskets fnl of trout.
One less fortunate than the rest, "i
getting around a deop hole fell into
it. For a while Ins companion
insisted he was a flounder, but when
he got out found that he was a good
aized Berry.
The reason why Astoria Engine
company No. l's flag was flying at half
mast on Sunday was because the boys,
when hoisting their flag in respect to
Rescue No. 2's anniversary, tangled
the halyards which broke, and the
flag could be neither lowered nor
raised. Richard Welcome climbed the
pole yesterday ?md fixed things.

About one hundred and fifty
fathoms of net came on to the beach
opposite Capt. Eastabrooks place on
the weather beach. No marks or
brand to indicate whore it belongs.
There were nine porpoises in the not;
their weight kept the net from coming
high up on the beach, and it had to be
cut to get them out. The not came
ashore about a week ago. The fish
in it were dead, and apparently had
been dead some time previous to the
net coming ashore.

We were in error in saying that
the Astoria Iron works wore doing the
work on the Fleetwood. The black
smithing was done by Arndt & Ferchon
and tho putting on was done by the
ciew.
Evory Monday a bigjnin of fish
is reported. This is conclusive proof
that the law ought to be so amended
as to have fishing only every other day
in the week, to give the fish a chance
to come in.

Chinese was badly cut in the face bjr

sent to Dr. Jennings for repairs, who
took the requisite number of stitches

L. Samuels, of the West Shore,
was lost ?i the woods at the foot of
Jim Crow mountain, near Drookfield
yesterday. He started with a part
from the Hayward, but found the trip
too tedious, so Jest inmseit. Jie was
finally discovered and brought into
camp, and is now in Astoria.

3,000 cases of salmon yesterday at
Brookfield, for shipment to London
by the Scottish Bard.
Lo and his family were in the

canoes up to the old camp grounds be

place was so changed from that of old
timos, that the Poor Indian could
scareclv realise the situation.

Hayward stopped at Brookfield Liking
on salmon Capt. Hoyt, Purser Dil
lingham, and Eiig'neor McDermot

they planted a while flag there. Mr.
J. G. Mcglor furnished them with a
guide. This is the parly with whom
Mr. L. Samuels started to make the
ascent.
It seems useless for the light
house board to issue notice to mari
ners That after September 1st the bell
sounded at cape Disappointment light
station, mouth of Columbia river, Ore
gon,w ill be discontinued. That bell has
not been heard at sea for forty 3'ears.
Besulos, thore is no cape Disappoint
ment; Hancock was intended; and it
is n't in Oregon, but in Washington
territory.
