Oonklin which was alike interesting to us and important to every one in this extreme northwest. Mr. Conklin is a representative of the National Associated Press of New York, and the people on the coast will recollect him as one of the Frank Leslie party to this coast in '77. Mr. Conklirfs purpose now, is to write a thoroughly descriptive book on Ore gon and Washington Territory : and his call upon us was to get our advice concerning certain projects laid before us. Tiiis we readily did, xnd coincide thoroughly with Mr. Conklin's idejis in successfully bringing before the publiCjthatpartof our national domain known as Washington and Oregon. His work will be an extra large 12mo. of somewhere between -100 and 500 pages. Throughout, the book will be profusely dispersed with illustra tions, as the name of the work The Picturesque Northwest will imply. In fact, this will be the leading feature of the work; in con nection with which, however, there is another, an original idea with Sir. Conkiin, which will make this feature one of the grandest for and most suc cessful representations by illustrations, which has ever come under our notice. Accompanying each picture there will be a fly-leaf upon which will be given a short, concise, but explicit descrip tion of the picture, occupying just the one page. The diversion this will af ford the mind from the more stern and practical facts in which the book will be full, suggests itself at once. In fact it will really secure the reading and the study of our country. Mr. Conklin is the author of ' 'Picturesque Arizona," which was favorably received last fall. Mr. Conklin is very desir ous of obtaining any and all informa tion pertaining to the mines and min ing in the two territories. He solicits all persons sending him any informa tion relative to this industry; and we would urge his request in this particu lar. Let any one possessed of facts send them in, and have this great, growing, and essential indnsfcrjT done justice to, in the coming work. Ad dress E. Conklin, Portland, Oregon, any time during the summer. The Eruption of Mount JElna. History records more than eighty eruptions of Mount iEtna. On the side of this burning mountain, now daily pouring forth immense masses of lava, are the important cities of Cantania and Aoi Reale, and about sixty villages. "With the exception of its eastern side, its slopes are of grent fertility, and maintain a total population of 300,000. Vast quantities of sul phur, mercury and alum arc ex humed, and agricultural pursuits are highly profitable, .ztStna in eruption is a scene to admire, at a distance; but well calculated to in spire terror among the valley resi dents, whose villages and fields are liable to be submerged beneath its lava flow. Alread" many large and valuable estates have been destroyed by the fiery flood, "which increases from day to day in volume, and threatens to lay waste a wide extent of country. The immense fall of ashes, which is a marked feature of the eruption, is 'alone productive of untold dam age, since in a. brief space of time these ashes are borne broadcast, compelling the flight of the inhabitants, and making life within the area of their in fluence unbearable. This vol cano is represented as not only in creasing: in activity, but is also ad diner to the number of its craters, and and no estimate can be formed of the length of its duration. IS either .can DOunds be set to the amount of destruction which "will be wrought while the erruptions continue. "Well may the victims of its depredations recall the younger Piny's graphic description of Vesuvius in eruption", when Herculaneum end Poinpeu were swept out of existence, and trem ble lest iheir populous towns and cities meet with a similar fate. Still more familiar to them mavbe the h'story of iEtna itself, in which is found a record of devastation and death. Some of its earnest exploits known to the generations of the earth occurred over five hundred years before the Christian era, suice which time, at intervals, its nerfonranccs have been numer- 4. ous. The cone of iEtna is over 10,S00 feet above the level of the sea. Its ilames can therefore, be seen at a long d'staice, and the more remote from danger the in spetor happens to be, the more he can survey eruption. the sub?imitv of the A expedition by the American colonization society will leave New York on Saturday, direct fo" Liberia. The society has applications from 5C0.O00 persons for passage and homes in the Liberian republic, thus showing that there is some deep-seated cause impelling the colored people to seek a change of residence. The number of emigrants sent will depend upon the amount contributed. The chief diffi culty of the society is to restrain those who a're not likely to succeed and be useful, and to obtain the means for settlinu others. .UAKKIKI). June ., Is7. at the resilience of J. W.
