We ac knowledge a pleasant call from him. Capt. E. C. Merriman, superin tendent of the loth light-house dis trict, started on a tour of inspection north, with the Shubrick yesterday. The good people at Knapna will enjoy a strawberry party at the house f A. Knapp, jr., Friday evening, the 20th. A general invitation is extend ed to all. Messrs. J. N. Tyner, and A. D. Hazen 1st and 3d assistants to the Postmaster-general will visit Oregon and Washington Territory before returning east. Mr. and Mrs. Winton proceed to St. Helen to-day upon a sad mission; the burial of their infant daughter, whose death, from whooping cough, is .noted in another column. We express sympathy for them in their loss. We feel that the Astoria schools are the best schools in Oregon if people would xisifc the school oftener they would ascertain this fact; as it is they can learn the fact from reading the reports which we present quiet fully with pride to day. . The New York Herald of June 6th will probably contain full particulars of the success of the daring Swedish explorer Nordenskjold, who has successfully circumnavigated the eastern continent. The Astoriax was the first newspaper in Oregon to lay the facts before the people. Oregon strawberries, the first of the season, at Larsens. The Astoria correspondent of the Oregonian suggests that it is because of the wholesome punishment meted out to vagrants by Judge Parker and the vigilance of the Police force, that Astoria k so quiet as it is. The San Francisco correspondent of the Standard says that lots of blacklegs and scoundrels who were in Portland .-i few months since are now plying their nefarious trade in the bay city, having left Portland through a whole some fear of the rulings of Judge Bellinger. The musical society on Monday evening held a business meeting at which much important business was transacted. A new constitution was presented and adopted by the so ciety, placing the same on a more per manent basis than formerly, and mak ing several changes on the old society not the least of which was altering the name from the Handel and Haydn .society of Astoria, to the Astoria Musical society, by wliich the new society will now be known, as it was thought by several members that the Kild name had a slight appearance of aping some of the similar societies m tidier cities.
