The god of day in its diurnal
rising and setting, the clock in its
chiming the passing hours, are not
more faithful in punctilious fulfil
ment of allotted rounds than the
arrival of The Daily Astorjax,
one of our most welcome visitors
that, though voiceless, tells us all
we could wish to know of the little
city within hearing of blue Paci
fic's ebbing and flowing tides, the
place like no other in the wide
world, therefore difficult of des
cription in choice of adjectives;
apropos the frequent quotations
from The Astokian in other pa
pers surirests the inference that
vour city will
soon assume the
rank 211 the state to wlncli it is en
titled by its pre-eminently favored
locality as a maritime point.
The capital citv makes haste!
but slowly; socially, politically
and otherwise. Our metropolitan
friends often make the consoling
remark that it is "as dead as can
be," which soft impeachment is
however emphatically denied it
would be scarcely becoming in a
place where senators are made,
and which is honored with the
presence of the highest state offi
cials, to show unseemly haste
either to be opulent or great.
Our hail storm was a notable
event of which we have constant
reminder in the battered and torn
condition of the foliage, ruined
gardens and fruits. That thirty
minutes left marks which only a
year can efface. The storm seemed !
ro vent a particular spite upon the
maples that mark a distinguishing
feature to our citv. Manv of those
beautiful trees you noticed on your 1
recent visit here, look as if made I
a tars-et of for numberless shots,
and have assumed a more than i
autumn hue, and uncanny because
out oi season; it is too late even
for nature's skilful hand to repair
until summer, autumn and winter
have completed the cycle of the
season once more.
'There is a Reaper whose name is Death
And, with his sickle keen,
lie reaps the bearded grain at a breath,'
And we have many times been
reminded of his presence, as one
by one he gathers into his garner
pioneers and others whom we have
met in our daily walks. First, Mr.
Hugh Owens, then Mr. I. N. Gil
bert, Hon. E. N. Cook, and lastly
Mr. A. L. Stinson, whose depart
ure hence you chronicled not long
since.
"One by one they go before us,
Only left us by the way.'
I have sometimes thought that
those who are soon to traverse the
valley of Shadows, wear the signet
somewhere, only with our limited
human vision we cannot see it.
Those named have left enduring
imprints upon onr local records
which will be undiminished for
many a year.
Mrs. Pieman's sweet lyric of
;1 come! I come! ye have called
me long," is for our summer-tide
this year rather than the spring, for
it has sometime seemed as though
the sun had forgotten how to
shine, or the clouds to cease their
weeping, but now the thoughts of
the many will turn mountainward,
and the favored few to inhale the
salt sea air. Astoria, as I have
often told you, has a charm all its
own, and often recalls half forgot
ten bits of poetry, and pleasant
walks on the shore with a stifT
breeze blowing in our face, and
the waves tossing their white caps
over the breakers on the bar.
'There is a pleasure, on the sounding
shore,
There is .society where none intrudes
ly the deep seii, and music in its roar.
While visiting there last sum
mer some idle time was spent in
watching the swallows that had
built a nest under the eaves of a
store opposite; a dignified gray
tgit frequently crossed the'treet to
the great alarm of the bjpds who
would circle around and around
her, chirping angrily the while,
but puss walked into the store, and
under the fence, pursuing the even
tonorof her way as if unconscious
of the flutter and distress she was
creating, but from an occasional
wicked look in her eve and an
omnious lick to her chops you
might infer that she had thoughts
about sour grapes, or when the
birds came too close that she was
mentally calculating hqw many
swallows it would take to make a
good dinner.
The ladies of the Methodist
church at this place gave" the first
strawberry party of the season, and
last evening: the Conereinitional
ladies held one of their finished
entertainments for which the so
ciety is so noted; the music was
under the direction of Miss Laura
x.dams, and was from the best com
posers. Most interest centered in
the scene from Shakspeare's u"Yin
ters Tale," whose Queen Hermione
appears as a statue, having really
been preserved from death by
iJaulma, a maid of honor.

Lerontes had also banished
his
daughter Perdita, who was saved
from death by a shepherd and
married the son of the king of
Bohemia. Miss Teresa Holder
ness made, an exquisit personation
of living statuary.
Salem has two vearly events to
liven up the city and remind us
that we "still live." One is the
state fair, which has been a partial
failure for several years, owing to
rains, but this year the "clerk" is
to be cheated if possible by the
! appointment of two weeks earlier.
I he future prosperity of tne Ag
ricultural society will depend in a
Sr?at measure upon the success of
tins year.
The second event is the com
mencement at "Willamette univer-
sity5 occurring next week, at which
tmie a cIass of SIX four 1:ldies and
'o gentlemen, win ue graduated.
The Baccalaureate sermon will be
preached on Sunday; music, ex
aminations and other literary ex
ercises will occupy the days until
Thursday, when the class will re
ceive their diplomas.
The seventh annual meeting of
the. Pioneer Association will take
place on the fair grounds June 17th
and ISth, with the attractions of
music, procession, addresses, camp
fires, picnic dinners, and best of all,
"experiences" related by pioneers
who love to "iisjht their battles
ocr again.
We noticed with regret, for the
sake of Astoria people, to learn of
Rev. Mr. Parker's resignation as
rector of Grace church. While a
resident of Salem Mr. Parker made
many warm friends, and a more
earnest, faithful worker never
lived among us. We will join you
in wishing him prosperity where
ever he may go. Of success he is
always assured, carrying, as he
does, the elements of it with him.
