It was a time of fun and laughter. Mom would al- ways make a rum pie and a pecan pie, and my aunt never got her pres- ents wrapped until after midnight on Christmas. We would get togeth- er either at our house in Gig Harbor, or their house in Seattle. Mock “thank yous” would follow. I have to wonder how this fat-laden piece of turkey made it through the post office; it was not well wrapped. To keep me in the holiday spirit after I had moved away, my dad once sent me a piece of crisp turkey skin that turned the envelope greasy, to my apartment in Los Angeles. Christmas has never been the same since those “good old days”. — Submitted by Madelyne Barnett From now through the end of the year, the Siuslaw News is featuring the region’s favorite holiday memories and traditions.
