Local volunteers joined with Soroptimist International of Florence on Dec. 15 to distribute annual Holiday Gift Baskets and toys to families. Story & Photos By Jared Anderson Siuslaw News S aturday’s Soroptimist In- ternational of Florence’s annual Florence Community Christmas Basket project was deemed a resounding success by organizers, as the event brought food and toys to hun- dreds of families throughout the region. “It went according to the way it was supposed to go, is the best way to say it,” said Carol Ben- nett, who organized the food basket portion of the event. “Fortunately, the weather coop- erated. It was cold, but not wet, which is always a plus. We can always handle one or the other, H undreds of local families received an early visit from Santa this year, as members of Siuslaw Val- ley Fire and Rescue (SVFR), Florence Police Depart- ment, the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve and more dis- tributed free toys on Tuesday at SVFR’s Main Station. With the appropriate documents, parents of chil- dren under the age of 14,were able to select a bag or box of toys from among the hundreds available, thanks to generous donations and year-round work by members of the Marine Reserves, Toys for Tots and local volunteers. A2 THIS WEEK ’ S Firefighters battle boat blaze along Highway 126 The cause of the fire that broke out aboard a 40- to 50-foot concrete boat ap- proximately 9 miles east of Florence along Highway 126 Sunday has yet to be deter- mined, according to Siu- slaw Valley Fire and Rescue (SVFR) Interim Chief Steve Abel. The fire, which began shortly after 3 p.m., was quickly contained to the ves- sel, which was tied to a small dock on the Siuslaw River, and was allowed to burn itself out below deck.
