Library Tidings by Kevin Mittge in Our Community. Thank You. Book Review “The Long Drop” by Denise Mina William Watt’s wife, daugh- ter and sister-in-law are dead, slaughtered in their own home in a brutal crime that scandal- ized Glasgow, Scotland. Despite an ironclad alibi, police zero in on Watt as the primary suspect, but he maintains his innocence. Distraught and desperate to clear his name, Watt puts out a bounty for information that will lead him to the real killer. Peter Manuel claims he knows the truth that will absolve Watt and has information that only the killer would know. It won’t come cheap. Manuel is an infa- mous career criminal, a degen- erate liar who can’t be trusted and will say or do anything to make a buck. But Manuel has something that Watt wants, which makes him the perfect target for Man- uel’s consummate con. Watt agrees to sit down with Manu- el, and before they know it, one drink has turned into an epic, forgotten night of carousing across the city’s bars and clubs that exposes the thin line be- tween a good yard and the truth. The next time the unlikely pair meet is across the witness stand in court — where Manu- el is on trial for the murder of librarians. Usually, there is only one librarian on duty at a time. All Oregon residents are invit- ed to take advantage of this free service. Watt’s family. Manuel calls Watt to the stand to testify about the long, shady night they shared. And the shocking testimony that Manuel coaxes out of Watt threatens to expose the dark hearts of the guilty … and the innocent. Based on true events, “The Long Drop,” by Denise Mina, is an explosive, unsettling novel about guilt, innocence and the power of a good story to hide the difference. Concert: Folksongs of the American Labor Movement The library is pleased to pres- ent Adam Miller, one of the pre- mier autoharpists in the country, on Thursday, Aug. 30, at noon in the library’s Bromley Room. Miller, a folksinger and nat- ural-born storyteller, will be celebrating Labor Day in this popular program featuring folk- songs about the people who built America and their struggle to overcome the conditions of their labor. Based in Drain, Ore., Miller travels 70,000 miles and per- forms 200 concerts annually at libraries, schools and festivals. Praised by such diverse mu- sicians as George Winston and Pete Seeger, the library is excited that Miller will be performing here. Story Times on Break Story times and Lego Club at the library will be on hiatus during the month of August. Come back in September when they start up on Tuesday, Sept. 7, the day after Labor Day.
