The concert will take place at the Florence Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, 87738 Highway 101 in Florence. Admission is free but donations are appreciated. Lynne and Frankfurter are a Celtic harp and multi-instrumentalist duo. They share a background as progressive rock musi- BOATER from page 1A when she was first starting out as a teacher in the late 1980s. “I remember his pas- sion. I thought of the students as little kids at the time, but he didn’t. His passion for their writing and symbolism and expression was so important to him.” When McKibbin became the elementary school PE teacher, Church was amazed by his enthusiasm. “He wouldn’t just tell kids how to square dance or how to use a parachute,” she said. “He was out there, having fun.” McKibbin also coached for the school wrestling team the Little Toads. “Little Toads was always such a great thing, and it just kept wrestling going in this community,” Church said. The reason for the boating accident that led to McKib- bin’s death is unknown. The night before, condi- cians who later discovered a love for Celtic, Renaissance and Swedish music on unique acoustic instruments. They hail from Oregon and tour exten- sively playing fine performing arts centers, theaters and intimate venues around the U.S. and Europe. They perform as a duo, with leg- endary storyteller Patrick Ball and with the Windham Hill Winter Solstice tours. Warnings were broadcast by USCG through radio, but it is not known when McKib- bin went out to sea, or from where. “I’ve been in shock try- ing to figure out what could have happened,” Huntington said. “Bruce was very experi- enced on the water with tons of local knowledge about the ocean and bar crossings up and down the Oregon coast.” He added, “The Siuslaw bar can be one of the roughest bars on the Oregon coast at times.” Smith stressed that all boat- ers should monitor chan- nels 16 and 22A for USCG broadcasts before venturing through the bar. “When we have a restrict- ed bar, we broadcast it every hour,” he said. “If you’re un- der the restriction, don’t go out.” If one is passed the bar when the restriction is placed, Smith recommended calling the USCG on channel 16 to obtain the most up-to-date information on when the bar is anticipated to subside. He also stated that boaters should wear life preservers at all times. “Bruce will definitely be missed by all who knew him,” Huntington said. “It’s not go- ing to be the same not hearing his voice on the marine radio giving out his GPS numbers of where he’s catching fish. “All of our thoughts and prayers go out to his family at this time.” Art Committee seeks grant writer Florence Public Art Com- mittee has sent out a request for proposals (RFP) for the “Public Art Grant Work Plan Creation & Grant Writer” po- sition. The City of Florence is seeking proposals from qual- ified individuals or firms with a proven track record to pro- vide grant writing services for the City’s Public Art Commit- tee. Successful applicants will demonstrate an ability to provide all of the following: researching and finding ap- propriate grants, drafting a strategic plan, writing, sub- mitting and securing grants. The Public Art Commit- tee has been tasked with the implementation of its work plan to establish new public art programs for the city, in- cluding the establishment of the art for the Highway 101 and 126 ReVision Florence project. ReVision Florence is a part- nership between the City of Florence, the Florence Ur- ban Renewal Agency, Lane County, Oregon Department of Transportation and the Florence Public Art Commit- tee. Each partner is investing time, money and/or in-kind participation to complete this rehabilitation of the major traffic corridor of Florence. The plans call for widening sidewalks, placing utilities underground, adding bicy- cle lanes, realignment of side streets, natural landscaping, bio-swales, benches, contem- porary street lighting and the placement of works of art that will be strategically located throughout this new streets- cape. The initial phase of this RFP request is for the com- pletion of a Public Art Grant Work Plan that would recom- mend all appropriate grants, whether local, nonprofit, state or federal, that may be avail- able to the city and commit- tee, where the monies would go to all costs associated with the creation, installation and maintenance of the artworks. RFP submittal will also be utilized as a basis for future grant writing work. Proposers shall provide submittal in either digital or hard copy format, by 5 p.m. on Aug. 14 to Kelli Weese, City Recorder/Economic De- velopment Coordinator. For full submittal informa- tion, visit ci.florence.or.us. 6th Annual Florence COMMUNIT Y September 7-9 How To Participate The fee to participate is $20.
