Last school year, through elementary, teen, sports and outreach programs, the local Boys and Girls club reached more than one in three Siuslaw School District students. The Boys & Girls Club of Western Lane County (BGCWLC) receives no finan- cial aid from state or federal governments and is supported solely by community giving and grant funding. Nationally acclaimed pro- grams like SMART Girls, Passport to Manhood, Money Matters and Positive Action help club members gain self- esteem, combat bullying, improve grades and develop healthy lifestyle choices while feeling safe in a secure nurtur- ing environment. Recently, the St. Mary’s Men’s Club showed its support by donating $300 to the B&G Club in an effort to help it con- tinue its efforts for local youth. New Life Lutheran will be hosting its fourth annual Blue Christmas Worship Service on Thursday, Dec. 21, at 2 p.m. at the church, located on 21st and Spruce streets. For many, Christmas is not the most wonderful time of the year. It is a time of busyness and can be a time that feels overwhelming. This worship is a time for remembering both persons and events that have been part of our lives in the past that are now changed or gone. Join New Life, in collabora- tion with the United Methodist Church, for a special Advent service of quiet worship where attendees will make time for prayer, reflection, remember- ing and preparing their hearts for the coming of Christ. A time of fellowship and refreshment will follow.
