In 1970, my basketball referee certification training instructed us to use a tech- nical sparingly. My class consisted of eight hours of rulebook study and four hours of on-court mechan- ics and court positioning. Some referee associations take short cuts in their certi- fication process. The game kicked off a five-game home stand, which continues Monday night against Sweet Home. Tuesday, Siuslaw hosts Reedsport. Tip-off for both games is at 6 p.m. www.dfw.state.or.us/RR THE LOCAL REGION Weekend fishing oppor- tunities: • Chinook fishing is open in coastal streams, and has been slow to fair recently. • While Chinook fishing is winding down, anglers should keep an eye out for early-returning winter steelhead. • The first winter steel- head of the season have been caught on the Alsea. • Trout fishing is closed in streams and will reopen May 22, 2018. Fall Chinook fishing has been slowing down, but a few fish are still available. Anglers are reminded that there is no wild coho salmon retention in 2017. S IUSLAW : 51 C. Junior post Gabe Simington domi- nated the paint to lead the Sailors in scoring with 13 points, helping secure the team’s first win of the season and put Mapleton (1-3) at 1-0 to open the Mountain West League. The Lady Sailors (0-4) fell to Mohawk that night, 49-15, with soph- omore Heather McMaster-Willis scor- ing 9 points for Mapleton. Thursday, Mapleton was back on its home court to host Lowell. The Red Devils won both match-ups, beginning with the girls’ game. Mapleton junior Erin Michael led the Lady Sailors, scoring 11 of the team’s 15 points, with Lowell getting the win, 40-15. Afterward, the Mapleton boys team fell to the Red Devils, 48-33. Last night, Mapleton hosted its third game of the week, taking on Reedsport (after press deadlines), in non-league competition. The Sailors will get a short break before returning to the hardwood on Wednesday, Dec. 20, when they’ll be on the road at Yoncalla, beginning with the girls game at 6 p.m.
