2 B SIUSLAW NEWS ❚ SATURDAY, DECEMBER 16, 2017 Horse Club returning for young equestrians in January C&M Stables has announced the Horse Club for equestrians between ages of 6 and 18 will soon begin its second session of the 2017-18 school year. The weekly one-hour pro- gram enables Horse Club members to build on the skills learned in the previous weeks Little from 1B profanity while addressing his players during a timeout. I warned him that any further profanity would result in a for- feit. After the game, two Hillsboro parents told me they were glad I did admonish their coach for language. Apparently, he had been using it all season. When I returned home I wrote a letter to the Hillsboro athletic director and principal about the coach’s behavior. In the next four years, I did not see this coach again. In 1974, while officiating a Pacific University JV basket- ball game against Concordia Community College, I gave a bench technical for a profanity yelled as I ran past their bench. When the coach insisted I point to the offending player, I told him it came from a bench player. There were no specta- tors behind the bench area, so it definitely came from their bench. Since I could not identi- fy the player, he took his team from the court and forfeited. The Pacific Athletic director wrote a letter stating Concordia Pacific would no longer sched- ule games against them. I was head girls basketball coach at Spray High School during the 1975-76 season. and use hands-on techniques to learn safety around horses, grooming and riding. The pro- gram also reviews horse and tack parts, and provides written handouts on its major sections. The program goals are for members to learn the basic fun- damentals of horsemanship, how much fun it is to ride and what wonderful animals horses are. The afterschool classes last for 15 weeks, beginning the week of Jan. 29, and ending the week of May 13. To sign up for Horse Club, stop by C&M Stables, 8 miles north of Florence at 90241 Highway 101, between the hours of 10 a.m. and 5 p.m., seven days a week. C&M Stables was estab- lished in 1981 by Florence native Jeff Chastain. For more information, call the stables at 541-997-7540. During the season, I was given no less than 12 technical fouls. Each one given was due to the officials’ administering of the rules of the game. They were not about their judgment calls. It was not until the following year that I discovered why they were so poorly trained as offi- cials. The next basketball season there were not enough girls to have a Spray girls’ team. So I traveled to the John Day Referee Association to be certi- fied. When I arrived, there were some shocked faces in the room. Some of these same offi- cials had given me technical fouls the previous season. I paid my dues and we went into a room. The president of the association passed out the final test as we entered the room. For the next two hours the test answers were discussed and answered as a group. This made sure they all passed. There was no on-court train- ing and we were told weekly assignments would be given out each Monday. No wonder I got so many technical fouls; many of these officials simply didn’t know the rules or their enforcement policies. Two things happened that year that showed me they still held a grudge. The first came while I was the home-book scorekeeper. A foul was called near half court. It was a terri- ble call and as I marked it in the book I shook my head in disbe- lief. The official calling the foul saw my head shake and gave me a technical. When he came to the scorers’ table, I said “What? You have got to be kid- ding me. No one saw that head shake but you.” Bam! He gave me another. The next incident occurred while I was watching our Spray boys play a game in Mitchell. While watching the game, a foul occurred that should have put a Spray player on the foul line. Instead, the official awarded the ball out of bounds for a Spray throw-in. I yelled from the bleachers for our player to not throw it in and lose the free throw oppor- tunities. After my second yell, I got a technical and another for questioning his authority. They had rabbit ears for my voice and hawk eyes for head shakes. So as basketball season begins, remember the officials can give a technical to keep the game under their control. Or possibly because they don’t like you. Let me pamper you! Make your appointment now for a pedicure!
