2 A SIUSLAW NEWS ❚ SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 2, 2017 OBITUARIES BARNUM—Dan Barnum died July 14, 2017, in a motor- cycle accident on Highway 20, east of Burns, Ore. He was returning from a vacation with friends, having traveled across the country to Maine for a Fourth of July cele- bration. He died doing what he loved; it just Dan Barnum happened way too soon. Dan was born in Florence on May 16, 1956. He was raised here, spent his whole life here, and loved it here. Dan’s father bought and developed land around Collard Lake in 1960. Dan and his brother Marc grew up camping, fishing and snor- keling during the summers. This is where Dan got the idea of becoming a certified skin diver. He and Marc were certi- fied when Dan was 15. Dan loved many sports like bowling and golf, but baseball and football were his favorites. He was All-Coast Defensive End his senior year on the Siuslaw High School football County offering transfer of local park to City Lane County officials are inviting Florence-area resi- dents to a community meet- ing next Thursday, Sept. 7, to learn about a county pro- posal that could transfer Ocean Woods Park from Lane County to the City of Florence. The proposal outlines Lane County’s interest in transferring Ocean Woods Park to the City of Florence, with a deed restriction requiring the property to remain a public park. The transfer would be in exchange for a reduced cost to extend sewer service to Harbor Vista Campground. “We understand and want to honor what we’ve heard from residents about the importance of Ocean Woods remaining a public park that everyone can enjoy,” said Lane County Parks Manager Mike Russell. More detail regarding the proposal will be available at the community meeting. Comments from residents will be shared with the Board of County Commissioners, which is scheduled to consider the proposal during its Sept. 12 meeting. If the Board of County Commissioners is support- ive of the proposal, it will be presented to the City of Florence for consideration and possible negotiation. The meeting will take place in the Bromley Room of the Siuslaw Public Library, 1460 Ninth St., beginning at 6 p.m. Visit us on the web T HE S IUSLAW N EWS . After graduating, he worked for Bob Mills Sr. alongside his friend, Bobby Mills Jr., driving truck and run- ning backhoes, cats — whatev- er he was needed to do. He had a natural affinity for running heavy equipment. He went to work for Murphy’s Saw Mill as a mill- wright, then on to foreman. During this time, computers were becoming a hot item and Dan taught himself code and started writing programs to help the mill organize sched- ules. When the mill in Florence shut down, he eventually became superintendent of Murphy’s Mill in Swisshome until it closed. He drove log truck for Gary Foglio for several years until an opportunity to take over the maintenance department at Sandpines Golf Course came along. Dan put his millwright skills to use keeping all the equipment running. Dan never lost his love of computers, which led to his last job as assistant IT technician for the Siuslaw School District, where his love of working with people made him a natural at the school. “Dan the Computer Man” was appreciated for his big smile and “can do” attitude by both staff and students. Dan loved fishing and being on the ocean, especially crab- bing and enjoying the crus- taceans with a bit of garlic but- ter. Dan, or “GUD” (Great Uncle Dan) as his nephews nicknamed him, was the glue that held his family together. One of his favorite pastimes was shooting off to Eugene, Newport or Coos Bay to watch Trae, and Court or Tyler play ball. His main passion was riding his Harley with friends. Dan met his best friend, Scott Waiss, riding with a group of people from the Florence area. Dan was adopt- ed into the Waiss clan by Scott and Gayle, and their three daughters, Melissa, Deb and Sarah. The girls soon fell under the spell of the big smile and booming laugh, and GUD snared three more nieces into his fan club. Dan was preceded in death by his parents, Barney and Mickey Barnum; and his sister, Barbra Miller. Dan is survived by his son, James Barnum (Eugene); brother and sister in-law Marc and Cindy Barnum; nephews Jesse Barnum and Danny Barnum, Troy and Rachel Knabe, Travis and Sarah Knabe; great-nephews Tyler, Trae and Court Knabe; great- niece Emily; and many cousins who will miss him greatly. GALLETON—Julie Ann Galleton, of Florence, went Home to be with Jesus on Saturday, Aug. 19, 2017. Julie was a fun, kind and lov- ing woman who was dedicated to her hus- b a n d , daughter and grand- children, but above Julie Galleton all else her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Julie was full of love and compassion and was always a friend to those in need. She loved to laugh and was good at bringing laughter with her. She loved to spend time with the elderly and enjoyed the time she spent with her friends at Shorewood. She also served as a Hospice volunteer for a time. In her spare time she loved to attend church and A.A. func- tions, to go camping, hiking, riding her Harley, playing games, visiting new and favorite places, dancing and tending her flower garden. Julie especially loved to spend time with her family. She added so much to the lives that surrounded her, and she will be greatly missed here on earth, but we know that she is alive and well with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ and we look forward to joining her again one day in Glory. Julie is survived by her hus- band, Don Galleton; her daugh- ter, Amanda Wise, and her hus- band Jesse; and five grandchil- dren: Isaiah, Seriah, Micaiah, Ezra and Evan. She is also sur- vived by her three sisters: Cody, Stella and Yvette, along with their husbands and chil- dren. There will be a Celebration of Life held Saturday, Sept. 9, at 1 p.m., at First Baptist Church, 1935 25th St., in Florence. All are welcome.
