Community and family help heal all wounds. They look out for those in need, and lift those who are in their darkest hours. That’s what Nicole, as she prefers to be called, believes. Nicole had seen her fam- ily members lose everything, but it was community and family that pulled them through. Her husband, who had been addicted to drugs most of his life, was kicked out of his home and lost his job, throwing the custody of their only child into doubt. But Nicole didn’t give up on him. “I just knew, the second I saw him, that he was mine,” she said. “He had no chance.” See DRINKING 7A PHOTOS BY JARED ANDERSON/SIUSLAW NEWS On Saturday, Siuslaw Watershed Council again dedicated the Salmon Run to former Mapleton resident Shiloh Sundstrom’s memory. More than 70 runners participated in the 3K and 5K, including youth and people from all over Lane County. S hiloh Sundstrom was a runner. A graduate of Mapleton High School, he participated in track every year he was eligible. College was no differ- ent, where he ran on the cross country and track teams for B Y J ARED A NDERSON the entire four years Siuslaw News he was there. “He was not built for long dis- tance running,” his father Johnny Sundstrom said. “Or speed. But he worked at it. He really did.” Johnny spoke about his son at the Salmon Run 5K and 3K fun run/walk that was held on Saturday, Aug. 28. The course culminated with each student getting to fly with a quali- fied pilot, flying the flight plan they worked out earlier in the course. During the Florence City Council meeting on Monday, Councilor George Lyddon, who attended the Aug. 25 class where the FAA stu- dents flew and graduated, said, “I think a seed has been planted. It's a great thing to see. This trail is rated “most difficult” by U.S. Forest Service, but even more dif- ficult is the story of Amanda De-Cuys, a native Coos woman who left behind bloody footprints in 1864 during a forced march from Coos Bay to a reservation near Yachats.
