2 A SIUSLAW NEWS ❚ SATURDAY, AUGUST 19, 2017 OBITUARIES RUEDE —Rebecca "Becky" Ruede, 61, of Dunes City, passed away Aug. 17, 2017. Arrangements are being held through Burns’s Riverside Chapel Florence Funeral Home. MCGUIRE —Robert “Mac” McGuire passed away quietly on M o n d a y, Aug. 7, 2017, sur- rounded by family. He was the beloved husband of Robert Dorothy McGuire McGuire, father to their three daughters: Cheryl, Geri and Theresa; grandfather to six and great-grandfather to four; he is also survived by his two younger brothers, Kenneth and Pat McGuire; and a sister, Mary. Mac was born Jan. 26, 1935, in Belvue, Kan. His early days were spent “on the farm.” At the age of 18, he joined the Navy, serving on seven different ships in 17 years at sea. He was homeport- ed in Sasebo and Yokosuka, Japan during the Korean and Vietnam wars. He served two years of recruiting duty in Wichita, Kan., and was a senior instruc- tor of the Steam Generating (Boiler) Inspector School at San Diego, Calif. Mac’s dedi- cation to his Naval career was recognized by the award of the Navy Achievement Medal with Combat, Navy Combat Action Ribbon, Navy Unit Citation, five Good Conduct medals, China Service Medal, two National Defense medals, two Armed Forces Expeditionary medals, seven Vietnam Service medals, RVN Gallantry Cross with Palm, Vietnam Campaign Medal and Korea Defense Medal. After retiring from the Navy, he went to a career as a con- tractor for Supervisor of Shipbuilding, Conversion and Repair (SUPSHIP). Mac and Dorothy retired to their seaside home in beautiful Florence 15 years ago. During his retirement here, Mac was an avid bowler and golfer. He was active with the VFW and served as Commander. During his term, he was responsible for overseeing the completion of the Veteran’s Wall on Bay Street. He was a Mason, an Elk and a Cootie. As an appropriate salute, Mac will be buried at sea. A memorial service may be planned locally at a future time. We wish you fair winds and following seas, sailor. You are loved and will be missed. Burns’s Riverside Chapel Florence Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Roads on and off major highways might be busier than usual so be sure to remain patient. • Keep cool and be kind in crowds and traffic. It’s sort of like a busy holiday that only comes once every 100 years or so. The next total solar eclipse to cross Oregon will happen in 2169. • Don’t get stuck. Bypass the lines by filling up gas tanks and grocery shopping early in the week before the eclipse. • Be patient with the inter- net, the ATM and cell phones. With the increased number of visitors, internet and cellular service may become slow or overwhelmed, especially on Monday. Lastly, • Don’t fall for a fake: wear certified glasses made to pro- tect eyes from an eclipse. Learn more from NASA at www.eclipse2017.nasa.gov/sa fety. Officers will also be on the alert for persons exceeding the posted speed limit and violat- ing the “hands-free” cellphone law. This enhanced enforce- ment is paid from dedicated funding through the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Oregon Department of Transportation crash data for 2015 shows that lack of safety belt or child restraint use was a factor in 35 percent — or 79 of the total 289 — motor vehicle occupant fatalities. Motor vehi- cle crashes are the leading nationwide cause of death for children ages one through 12 years old. A new Oregon law for chil- dren under two years old requires they use a child seat with harness in a rear-facing position unless the child turned one year of age prior to May 26, 2017. A child over age two or who turned one year of age prior to May 26, 2017, must continue to ride in a car seat with har- ness or in a booster until they reach age 8 or 4’ 9” in height and the adult belt fits them cor- rectly. The new law, which extends the rear facing requirement from age one to age two, will better protect the child’s head, neck, and spine from potential crash injuries. Rear-facing seats spread crash forces evenly across the seat and child’s body, while also limiting forward or side- ways motion of the head. For help selecting or installing child car seats, con- sult the seat manufacturer’s instructions, your vehicle owner’s manual, or visit a local child seat fitting station listed at: www.nhtsa.gov/apps/cps/ index.htm.
