Eclipse tips offered to
Lane County residents
Lane County is gearing up
to help residents and visitors
make the most of the 2017
solar eclipse on Aug 21.
“With much of Lane
County at or close to 99 per-
cent totality we have a great
opportunity to view the
eclipse without fighting traffic
and the risk of being stuck on
the road during the event,”
said Lane County Emergency
Manager Linda Cook. “We
encourage residents to enjoy
the eclipse from a location
near them — a backyard, bal-
cony or similar place can pro-
vide a great and convenient
view.”
Tips for Lane County resi-
dents during the eclipse
include:
• Consider the eclipse a
multi-day
event
with
increased traffic through Aug.
23.
• Florence is on the “path to
the path” of totality. Roads on
and off major highways might
be busier than usual so be sure
to remain patient.
• Keep cool and be kind in
crowds and traffic. It’s sort of
like a busy holiday that only
comes once every 100 years
or so.
The next total solar eclipse
to cross Oregon will happen
in 2169.
• Don’t get stuck. Bypass
the lines by filling up gas
tanks and grocery shopping
early in the week before the
eclipse.
• Be patient with the inter-
net, the ATM and cell phones.
With the increased number of
visitors, internet and cellular
service may become slow or
overwhelmed, especially on
Monday.
Lastly,
• Don’t fall for a fake: wear
certified glasses made to pro-
tect eyes from an eclipse.

Police two-week seatbelt ‘Blitz’ to begin Monday
Oregon State Police, the
Lane County Sheriff’s Office
and the Florence Police
Department will be working to
increase proper safety belt and
child car seat use during a
statewide traffic enforcement
“blitz” from Aug. 21 through
Sept. 3.
Officers will also be on the
alert for persons exceeding the
posted speed limit and violat-
ing the “hands-free” cellphone
law. This enhanced enforce-
ment is paid from dedicated
funding through the U.S.
Department of Transportation’s
National Highway Traffic
Safety Administration.
Oregon Department of
Transportation crash data for
2015 shows that lack of safety
belt or child restraint use was a
factor in 35 percent — or 79 of
the total 289 — motor vehicle
occupant fatalities. Motor vehi-
cle crashes are the leading
nationwide cause of death for
children ages one through 12
years old.
A new Oregon law for chil-
dren under two years old
requires they use a child seat
with harness in a rear-facing
position unless the child turned
one year of age prior to May
26, 2017.
A child over age two or who
turned one year of age prior to
May 26, 2017, must continue
to ride in a car seat with har-
ness or in a booster until they
reach age 8 or 4’ 9” in height
and the adult belt fits them cor-
rectly.
The new law, which extends
the rear facing requirement
from age one to age two, will
better protect the child’s head,
neck, and spine from potential
crash injuries.
Rear-facing seats spread
crash forces evenly across the
seat and child’s body, while
also limiting forward or side-
ways motion of the head.
For help selecting or
installing child car seats, con-
sult the seat manufacturer’s
instructions, your vehicle
owner’s manual, or visit a local
child seat fitting station listed
at: www.nhtsa.gov/apps/cps/
index.htm.
