SIUSLAW NEWS ❚ WEDNESDAY, MAY 10, 2017 Exhibit from 1A The process of felting is ancient, with examples of the finished material being dated as thousands of years old. The basic techniques to cre- ate the fuzzy fiber are quite simple. “The art of felt making is rel- atively easy, but requires a lot of time and handwork,” Elfers said. “To make felt, all you need is wool fiber, soap and water. The fiber is laid out in the desired pattern, then soapy water is used to wet down the fiber. From there, it is all about friction. As you rub the wet fiber it begins to permanently tangle as it shrinks, turning from fiber to felt over time.” While the techniques used to create the unusual looking crea- tures that now hang in the PHOTOS BY MARK BRENNAN/SIUSLAW NEWS Intricately delicate jelly fish and brightly colored fish float in the atrium at Siuslaw Public Library, showcasing artist Kathy Elfers’ talents as a master felter. Western Lane Ambulance District Introducing library seem simple, the intri- cate nature of the exhibit has attracted a lot of attention from library patrons. “It has a local flavor and it is fun,” Colgan-Bennetts said. “The children love it . They look up at it and point at it — and that’s the whole point of having art in the library.” Elfers has been a regular patron of the library for years and is a big supporter of the increased attention that art is attaining. However, the public’s reac- tion to the large sea creatures hanging in the high center raftered section of the library has been somewhat over- whelming for her. 9 A “I am absolutely humbled by the outpouring of support from the public. People I have never met have been contacting me, telling me how much they love the show. My puffer fish, ‘Spike,’ seems to be one of the public's favorites, and I’ll have to say he’s one of mine too,” Elfers said. Siuslaw Public Library will be showing the giant felt installation for the next couple of months. Elfers will be appearing at a ‘Meet the Artist’ reception on Monday, May 15, from 11 to 2 p.m. in the Bromley Room of the library. For more information, call 541-997-3132.
